Zip will show you the high polish, probably the best.

grayelky

You could have it extensively engraved for about $300-$350, including your initials on the back strap.

That is nice.  Not overdone

Looks like Otto Carter's fine craftsmanship.

grayelky

No, unfortunately. Otto's work is much nicer, and correspondingly much more expensive. Jim Small, (Small Engraving) did this one. I have 2 more LR w/ "B" serial numbers I want done. One day. The irony is, for what I am about to spend on the 2 SWs, I could probably get the other 2 engraved.

I carried this one for about 7 years, after it was engraved. I have migrated towards the magnum for pocket carry, and this one does not get the attention it deserves.

I disagree on the work by Otto being nicer.  Your gun appears to be actual cut engraving, and Otto uses a power engraver from what I understand, and his work is not really hand engraving, cut in with a chisel and hammer.  His look nice but are generally overdone in my opinion, and I MUCH prefer that one of yours.

In my mind, the engraving should enhance the art of the gun; NOT BE the art that just happens to use the gun as a canvas.

   But that is just me.

louiethelump

I WAS WRONG.  He uses an air engraver too.

   BAD Louie!!!!

Nice work. I pretty much agree with Louie, I like no more then 1/2 coverage. ( 1/4 - 1/3 idealy) It should look like a gun with decoration, not a decoration that started out as a gun.

If you are considering engraving (on a budget)Google Michael Gouse's website. He does pretty nice work very reasonably priced.

The engraving looks nice on it that is for sure. Is there a way to get the case hardening look or something like it. Don't really want a painted finish.

bill_deshivs

Engraving with a powered engraving chisel is the same as the hammer/chisel method, only faster.

louiethelump

And spray painting with an air brush sprayer and air pressure is the same a painting Mona Lisa by hand, only faster.

AND, I was NOT trying to tell anyone else what they can have or should have or like.  Being a DISCUSSION board, I was discussing and offering MY OPINION.  Ya'll do EXACTLY as you please!  It does not bother me at ALL!!!  I am NOT a liberal and everyone does not have to do or like what I like.

   OK???????

Louie.  OK with me. Never ment to imply you did. Have gone back and edited my post OK?

chopprs

I think you would be hard pressed to find anyone using a hammer and chisel today. That would be like driving around in a horse and buggy.....why?!?!?!

louiethelump

For the same reason that portraits in oil are done with a BRUSH.

A photograph will do the same thing, right?

There are LOTS of engravers using a chisel and mallet.  I watched the guy at S&W working on a Walther slide the last time I was up there.

For the same reason that hand finished furniture and fine rifle stocks are done BY HAND.  You could use a buffer, but the traditional way that is the "art" of doing things is often by hand.  That is what makes them SPECIAL.

For the same reason HAND MADE knifes are made by HAND with no jigs or tooling and each one is slightly different and each is UNIQUE.

No two Randall knifes are exactly alike.  They are made by hand.  (just an example here, there are many others)

.....BAAAAHHH!!!

   That is my answer!

louiethelump

and a wise and profound answer it is too............

Maybe if you close the photo I returned to WH you would be able to concentrate better and come up with something more interesting...............

The hand guides the air graver-just like it does the chisel. You are simply replacing the manual hammer with a pneumatic hammer. Michelangelo would have used an air graver if it were available.

   To Dracothered-

There is not much you can do to a stainless gun. You can satin finish it (like it is now,) bright polish it, or a combination of the 2 finishes. You can engrave or otherwise embellish it, or you can paint it (yuck!) You can put different grips on it, too.

chopprs

Bill, I seriously dout that "YOU" could attest to what Michelangelo would do....that comment actually made me chuckle out loud!

louiethelump

HEY!  Leave him alone.  I have it good authority that Bill was a senior adviser to Michelangelo, so since he was there, he would know.

That is how Bill became such an authority on all things.  All that experience, you see.........

   Bill:

Seriously, don't take it so personal.  I know you use a power engraver.  Lots of guys do.  Lots of guys air brush tee shirts too!  There is NOTHING wrong with that!  (Lord knows, I cannot do either one!)  Not everyone can do it by hand.  That is OK!  To say it is the same thing, when a close and magnified examination of the two cuts tell the examiner if it was done with a power graver or by hand.  If a few seconds with a magnifier can tell them apart, they are no more the same thing than a Cubic Zirconium is the same as a diamond.  Most people won't know the difference, unless they look close and know what to look for.  BUT NOT THE SAME THING.

No reflection on your skill with either an air brush OR a power engraver.

   Peace?????

louie is on fire today...im enjoying it...keep smokin those slack jawed posters....
It's too bad that our friends cant be here with us today

bill_deshivs

I don't take it personally.

The only difference under magnification is that the powered graver cuts are smoother and more uniform.

Chopprs- show us some of YOUR engraving!

dracothered

Back to the topic please. I like the engraving, but would like to know what kind of finish options I have out there that can be done.

zippovarga

I guess I'm a little behind in keeping up with the posts!! lol......SORRY! Here are a couple pictures of the full polished look.

As you can see on the Earl, I removed the loading lever, hammer and trigger and fully polished the rest of the Earl, then put everything back together and the end result was slight contrast to a mirror polished mini. I left the flutes un touched on the 1 5/8" Magnum for contrast and the remaining two were full polish. Several stages are needed to get to this level of shine, but I'll not repeat what's been said already on numerous other posts. Here is a link to a generic How To Video I did a little while back that helps explain the process. Best wishes to what ever direction you decide to take. Oh!!! And Welcome to the asylum....uh, I mean FORUM!! lol

   Another pic, just because..lol

   or two hehe

To  me with stainless you either ZIPP it or leave it.   You can get creative with grips and cool thing there is you can change them any time you want for a different look.  I need to post my grip collection now I think it out numbers my guns for sure.  Have a case just for grips.

zippovarga

lol..I have a cigar box dedicated to grips and it's about to burst at the seams! With your grips and my polishing, I can see a fair trade off coming Steve!

blitzkrieger

I dig the heck out of the mini that had the 32 skulls engraved into it. Can someone bring those pics into this thread so I can drool over them again? lol

I say polish to the EB001

I'm with you Steve! I know what ever number I wind up with, it'll get Zipped. If I'm fortunate enough to get one in the first 10 I would be ecstatic, but satisfied with one within the first 100 as long as it's the first released EB serialized version. Just something about a low serial number has always appealed to me. Not that it is worth anything more than any other. Just a personal preference. The EB is just the icing on the cake. To be able to say, "yep...There's not many of these babies in the world."

Uncle lee...be sure to kick the ones you drop my way..lol.

Uncle

I am a man but I can change if I have to I guess

dracothered

Well I got some Boot Grips on my 1 5/8" Magnum and I like it better already.

I'm wondering if there is a way to install a rear sight on this little puppy now. Would it void the warranty if a threaded hole and a pin alignment hole was drilled into the top of the frame?

plinker631

I think I am ordering boot grips for

   my magnum......
So many guns; So little money!
