Well we all share a love of firearms and we all love pictures. It seems quite a few of us hit the range often so let's see some range day pics. I know I've posted this pic before but I figured I'd get things started with this one.
Hate to say it, but when on the range the last thing on my mind is taking pictures as I'm really not that much of a photo bug. Heck, I consider myself doing good if I remember all the stuff I just need to shoot. I will try to think of taking some photos the next time I shoot the minis.

Shooting pics counts as shooting ;)
I take pics all the time. Easy nowadays with these smart phones. Glad they weren't around when I was young and stupid.
Ranger and Ruger day
I built a couple of these tables that fold up for use on the range. I primarily use them at my own range, but a local public range I have used has no such tables, just std. dirt mound backstops, with no place to load or keep your toys out of the mud.
As I was wandering through my photos, I also came across the backstop I constructed for my range. It is eight feet wide, 5 feet tall, and has 1.75 miles of woods behind it. The dirt fill measures about 3.5 feet, with the back of the stop as shown with the wood, brick, and steel plates. 7.62 x 39 at 50 yds has yet to show its face out the back.
And my beautiful wife at the range during her CCW class ~2012.
Can't wait to hit the range. Good stuff folks!
hey folks, we finally got to dry out some after Alberto blew through, so I hit the range across the street for a little double-action fun:

(actually, it doesn't matter if it's raining or not, as it's an indoor range - best I can do 'round these parts - but the air conditioning sure is nice)

No targets brought home. I was mostly getting DOPE (Data Observed from Previous Engagements) on my rifle after changing ammo that would feed more reliably and shooting steel. The dope shots were at Caldwell Orange Peel 8" Sight-In Targets (https://www.midwayusa.com/product/2135324032/caldwell-orange-peel-targets-8-self-adhesive-sight-in-package-of-5) which were left on the target stands. The range might get a little upset if I were to bring the steel targets home. <grin>
CCI Standard Velocity was very accurate out of the Savage B22 FV-SR, but needed to be cleaned in less than 50 rounds to extract consistently. Not something I want to do during a match. I switched over to Geco Match 22 and haven't had a single extraction issue in over a brick of ammo with no cleaning. I did have to get all of the CCI SV "gunk" out of the barrel before the Geco would group well.

I walk out my back garage door some 30 yards to the 90 yard mark; but I like to shoot at the 75 yard mark more often. Obviously a little farther when I set up for handguns. I mostly shoot steel, unless I'm trying to sight in a firearm, then it is paper.
Nothing special, 4"x4"x4' stacked in U shape, about half of U filled with dirt, held together with scrap OSB.
Yeah I still have to drive (for now) to the range but it's kind of a ritual for me. I go to breakfast and then head to the range. If I'm just shooting handguns I'll take the bike. Makes for a nice ride. When I'm playing with the AR I take the truck.
This was a truck day...
posted this for uncle lee he always had good to say for my old guns. took 3 out 22 22m back one 44 years old middle 22 62 years old front my bw 22 22m 6 months old it did what i bought it for 4hits out5 on caps at 10ft. dont think he saw the back one.
hey folks - another good day at the range... broke in a stainless mouse (i now call my pair 'Salt and Pepper'):

i also had a box of 13-year-old Winchester .380ACP FMJ flat nose, so i used it up on a break in of a recent impulse buy (the last five of the initial 12 rounds was a 1.5" group - took 7 rounds to get used to the pistol, which shot POA out of the box):

Here's one from only 50 yards with iron sights. I'm happy with that cause it's tough for these old eyes to see that far any more. I'll get a scope one of these days and take some longer shots.

Thanks Harry... yeah that 50 yards is my limit. I'll get some kind of optics for it eventually. Just gotta find that fine line of affordability and quality before I "pull the trigger" so to speak.

Yeah they can be a bit pricy. I bought a cheap red dot off eBay and it survived two trips to the range before it fell apart. I ended up sending it back for a refund. Same thing happened with a scope I got from amazon. The scope made one trip to the range and then got sent back. I'll save a couple bucks here and there and get something decent but not too expensive. Just enough to get me to the 200 yard mark at the range.
If you want a decent 3MOA red-dot for a 22 rifle without breaking the bank, take a look at the Bushnell TRS-25:
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00200E0HM/
I've got one on a M&P 15/22 that I've put thousands of rounds through without issue. Many of those were at a high rate of fire (25 rounds in a couple of seconds).
I spent a lot more on the red dot for my S&W Victory pistol as I bought the Vortex Venom 3 MOA:
http://www.vortexoptics.com/product/venom-red-dot-3-moa-dot
The Vortex is pricey, but a much lighter, smaller, and better optic for a pistol.

I was actually contemplating that. Had it saved to a list on amazon. My s&w might have a bit more kick tho.
There's a lot of people using the TRS-25 on higher caliber weapons (i.e. AR or AK rifles). Checking the reviews, they've been mostly positive.
If you were speaking of the Vortex Venom, it has the same Vortex VIP

hey folks, had some fun this morning... after a nice breakfast, my neighbor and i went across the street to the range... he wanted to sight in his Bersa .380 (which only needed a slight turn of a screw for windage), and i wanted to play with a new Tomcat, my P238, a PT-22, my Charter snubby and some speedloaders i modified for my loading box...
after testing various .22LR brands/types with the PT-22, i've finally settled on CCI Standard Velocity, 40-grain LRN (1070fps); a recent bulk buy ($0.04/round) seems to have paid off with no malfunctions after a couple hundred rounds:
i next put 100 rounds through the Charter .22mag snubby... the speedloaders allowed me to shoot the revolver so many times in such a short time that it got really hot - but a finger press ejected spent brass every time and with no problem (btw, Charter offers a nice little leather holster for what i think is a very reasonable price):
the Tomcat had a couple misfeeds with Winchester FMJ flat-nose, but the PMC FMJ cycled flawlessly... like my first Tomcat, i'm going to need to drift the rear sight a tad to the right... i'll post pics when i get the chunky INOX monkey sighted in...
and finally, for the 4th, i threw a couple magazines through my P238... also pictured is a birthday gift from my wife, a nice Reeve Sebbie to go with the P238:

funny you mention that... despite growing up in an orphanage in one of the worst areas of Philly, the only problem i ever ran across as a kid was from some kids demanding 'toll' money for walking down their street (used to have to hide my bus fare in my shoes)

hey folks - another fun morning at a local range (this one was not as close at the one across the street, so i had to drive for 10 minutes south)... took a couple pistols, and also just picked up a new piece - a high-polish Charter Arms Undercover .38 Special...
the first pistol was my Tomcat, out on a second run after a sight adjustment - worked great with no malfunctions using some old Winchester .32ACP FMJ FN...
my real reason for the outing was to test out a recent Kel-Tec P32 Generation 1 to Generation 2 conversion... i found a Gen 1 at a reasonable price (in bad shape - looked like it was stored in a tackle box)... however, Kel-Tec no longer supplies parts for the Gen 1 version, which has a different grip, barrel, slide, firing pin, firing pin spring and extractor assembly - and, as i found out when doing the conversion, possibly a *slightly* different hammer...
since i already had a spare barrel, slide, and grip on hand (along with a hammer, as it turned out), the conversion was simple: swap out the requisite parts - everything went fine until i tried manually cycling the pocket pickle - nope, nada, wouldn't work... thought i had the hammer resting on the sear incorrectly... nope, nada, wouldn't work... then a lightbulb went on, and i reasoned that the Gen 1 hammer may not work with the Gen 2 sear, which is installed in every spare grip...
put in a new Gen 2 hammer, assembled, and then... voila! pistol cycled properly...
so the function test was fine on the bench, but for me the proof of the pudding is on the firing line... i took along a variety of magazines from my other P32s and ran a half box of German-made GECO .32ACP FMJ through the converted P32... no malfunctions, and I think i like the results:
(and i'm not that good of a shot - this was only at 12 ft, but the distance i train at)
all in all, a good morning...

hey folks - after breakfast my neighbor and i hit the range across the street... he was testing out a new S&W 9mm (i forget the model), wanted to finish up a box of Wally World .380 FMJ FN in his Bersa, and run a couple magazines of CCI SV through his Ruger Mk IV...
i wanted to test out an RTK trigger upgrade to my Kel-Tec P32, whom i've named 'Frankie,' as it's a Gen 1 to Gen 2 conversion... it was great! ran a full box of GECO .32ACP FMJ with no malfunctions or problems with resets (i had to mill out a bit forward on the receiver to accommodate the new trigger - don't have to do this on the Gen 2 receivers)...
but the most fun i had was putting 50 rounds of FMJ FN through a new revolver...
i started off with single-action to get a feel for the handling... initial cylinder shot a bit low, so aiming was at top of bullseye:
and i finished off with double-action a yard closer, trying to keep on target:
I think I'm pretty happy with the results. It is possible that the revolver may shoot higher with more powerful loads? but I like the ammo I'm using - quite economical reloads from a couple local young guys at Hyperion Munitions (always support your local munitions makers!).
willie

Tighten up your grip. You're seeing muzzle rise.
hey folks - had fun at the range today; finished up function-testing my NAA Guardian .32ACP (reaching 200 rounds following an extractor assembly replacement)
Also got a chance to shoot my father-in-law's S&W Pre Model 10 nickel-plated snubby. Interesting family history behind this one. It was given to my 88-year-old father-in-law by his uncle-in-law in the late 1950s. His wife's uncle (who would be my grand-uncle-in-law?) was the sheriff of St. Johns County, Fla. for nearly 20 years. He was accused of collusion with moonshine runners 48 years ago, and was subsequently removed from office by the governor. He was later acquitted of the charges in a trial, and soon after at hearings in Tallahassee in front of the Senate, was exonerated.
This revolver was kinda beat up, with dings on the muzzle and a broken spur. (My father-in-law didn't really take care of this one - it was wrapped in an old kitchen towel for almost 50 years.) I took it to a local smith to have the spur ground off and cleaned up. It's now a double-action shooter and is pretty much POA at my normal 12 ft shooting distance:

I grew up playing cowboys and Indians. That's only half true. I'm 68 now and the "growing up" part may be a stretch. My brother and I were shooting out in the woods one day and the inner cowboy came out in me. I drew this Indian and practiced speed shooting. My brother was yelling at me "The Indians are coming! The Indians are coming! Hurry! Faster! Keep shooting! I fired and loaded this little Bearcat as fast as I could and eventually saved the wagon train. Sometimes it's cops and robbers, or defending the Alamo. Always fun, and it improves our shooting skills. Hope I never grow up.

Honky . . . It is obvious that you are socially and culturally insensitive to the plight of the Native Americans and with that post will never be able to run for President. Good for you. BTW, I miss those days, too.
I'm way beyond deplorable. I should have warned you earlier; but I was afraid I wouldn't have made it past the probationary period. To be fair, when I was a kid, I'd play an Indian too. I was barred from that when the suction cups "accidentally" fell off my arrows just before I let go. After a couple of those incidents; I became type cast as a cowboy.

Yeah, in the old days, the kids in the neighborhood all played Cowboys and Indians: some days you were a Cowboy, other days you were an Indian. It didn't matter much. It was all in fun, and we had all kinds of kids in the neighborhood; white kids, black kids, and a few that were in between. Even had some girls that were mixed in with the gang. It didn't seem to matter much, as all would fall down when shot. And we all had some type of gun holster with cap guns, except the girls of course. But one kid always brought his bow out and claimed to be the chief. Not sure what was up with that. But we all had fun. We just didn't know how damaging we were being to the future of the American culture by being so insensitive. Sorry . . . . I guess.

OK folks... just got back from a very enjoyable time this morning.. not only did i get out of doing cleanup of the breakfast dishes, but i was able to finally break in my other Taurus PT-22...
i have two, named 'Salt' and 'Peppa' (stainless and blued steel)... Peppa took a little over 400 rounds of 1200fps+ LR to break in to the point where it reliably shoots standard velocity lead round nose... CCI Stingers are a no-go on these little pocket mice in my opinion, as a single magazine blew the slide off Peppa's rails during break-in... the good news today is that now Salt is broken in... i'm a happy camper:

i have two, named 'Salt' and 'Peppa' (stainless and blued steel)... Peppa took a little over 400 rounds of 1200fps+ LR to break in to the point where it reliably shoots standard velocity lead round nose... CCI Stingers are a no-go on these little pocket mice in my opinion, as a single magazine blew the slide off Peppa's rails during break-in... the good news today is that now Salt is broken in... i'm a happy camper:

i also had some fun with my Charter Undercover... the only problem with using a loading block and speed loaders is that it seems a box of ammo can go too quickly!

hope everyone else out there has a great day today... we had torrential rains yesterday, but the sun has been out and my arthritis is telling me that the front has passed...

Glad you had a good day willie. I saw one of those Taurus PT-22's at the gun show a week ago. Almost bought it but figured if I'm gonna go that size on a gun I'll go with a .380 LCP. No hurry tho I've got enough to shoot with for now.
Quote from: Honky Tonk Man on August-12-18 11:08
Great shooting there Willie!
thanks - the PT-22 is double-action only and i shot double-action w/the .38SPL...
honestly though, my general practice is done at 12 ft, sometimes 15ft - which i consider practical distance for mouse guns and snubbies (although the Kel-Tec P32 will be quite accurate out to 8-10 yards)
and Mr. SJ: yes, the PT-22 is kinda chunky - but fun and cheap to shoot (the next time the wife unit goes to the range with me it will be her weapon of choice - she liked the Smith 317 in double-action, so she should have fun with the Taurus running standard velocity rounds)...
and i also used the PT-22 to finish an odd assortment of leftover rimfire in the range bag: Colibri (22 long), and .22 shorts... (fun to load the tip-up barrel, click in place, shoot, then flip the button and have the barrel throw out the case)
and a .22 short Remington i found on the floor even cycled the slide and ejected properly - must have been one of those 'magnum' .22 shorts!
:)

hey folks - went out this morning w/my neighbor for our regular Tuesday morning range time. He was paper-holing targets with .32ACP through an old Davis P32 he bought years ago for $60 new, along with .22LR ammo in his new Ruger MkIV tactical.
An older guy (not older than my shooting buddy - he's 82) came up to him while he was using his Ruger and said, "Can't miss with that one, huh?" which made my buddy pretty happy.
I went old school with single-action using a stainless steel .22WMR Charter Pathfinder. Here's why I really like this snubby:

OK so tomorrow would have been the one year anniversary from the last time I was able to get to the range. Today I got there.
First two targets were pretty, the Charter Arms behaved well all day. The BW was a bit temperamental. A couple of FTF with the CCI HP+V, and shot high at the longer ranges... But it was good to get out and shoot.
I forgot how much of a flame those HP+Vs put out... The Gold Dots and th Hornady FTXs were much nicer to shoot.
Good deal, AL. I bet it felt great to get out.

Glad you got some range time Al. I hope you find the time and opportunity to get out more often (if you like) that's what my target usually looks like when shooting my minis. I was surprised when I took the short out about a week ago that it did as well as it did.
glad to read that you got out to the range! and yes, i like the Gold Dots - just wish they were cheaper - if they were i'd make 'em my standard .22wmr round!

How does $10.57 per box (roughly 21 cents per round) when you buy 7 boxes sound for Speer Gold Dot 22WMR - Short Barrel?
Go to https://www.brownells.com/ammunition/handgun-ammo/22-wmr-40gr-gold-dot-hp-50-box-sku105000674-119779-176239.aspx

By the way, I used the same code to order 2,000 rounds of CCI SV 22LR for $77.96 to the door. That's under 4 cents per round (3.898). And here I thought I was doing good when I ordered a bunch of bricks of it at a nickle a round.
Gold Dot 22WMR is my carry ammo too, Brownell's tends to have great prices and sometimes MidwayUSA does a good sale too. So I have about 1500 rounds of the stuff here now. 8)
It is good stuff, I generally have my Black Widow with me along with my 22short Watch Fob of course. Thanks for the order codes even though I can't buy any more as I am broke for a good while.
Good People here on the NAA Forums like billmeek makes it a great place, Thank you.
Thanks for the compliment Warty.
I can empathize with not being able to order. I shouldn't as I've bought too much lately, but it's hard to pass up on a good deal when I know I'll need it pretty soon.

hey folks - love seeing the range pics in this thread!
after an early morning swim and a quick breakfast, i headed across the street to do a shakedown/sighting in on a new acquisition: a Ruger SP101 Model 5765.
it had been taunting me from the shelf of a LGS for a few weeks, and i just happened to have the simoleans to swing it (along with dispensation from She Who Must Be Obeyed, as i recently sent and sold three lesser-used guns out the door)
the bonus is that DS-10-Speed's S&W 317 loading block, box and speed loader works great for the SP101:
i ran mostly CCI 'Swamp People' .22LR, then some CCI standard velocity LRN, and finished up with some leftover Velocitors and Stingers (which had very little apparent recoil - very nice)
windage was spot on, but pistol shot low, so i had to raise the rear sight @ 25 ft... then i brought the target in for some double-action at my 'normal' 3-yard practice (i'm working on getting up to 5 yards with some accuracy)...
i'm pretty happy with my new kit gun...

very nice indeed... my mother never passed down any weapons (and if she had it would have been a Walther, Mauser or CZ)
early this morning i went through sp101 disassembly for cleaning - went very smoothly with no problems:
1. remove grip screw, pop off grip inserts, retain brass (?) hammer spring pin, pull off grip
2. cock hammer, insert spring pin, release hammer, pull caught hammer spring assembly
3. pop up hammer pin, remove, then remove hammer
4. push trigger assembly button through grip frame, pull out assembly
5. drop cylinder and slide crane and cylinder off revolver
a bit more involved than other makes, but not too bad... some sharp edges and i found a loose shaving, but nothing major

Yeah, me too. There is just something about pulling them apart, scrubbing them out, inspecting the parts, lubing them right, reassembling them, testing the action, and polishing them to a fine sheen. It is indeed a very intimate time with your peacemaker. I, too, seem to clean them more than shoot them.
I hate cleaning the guns. I do it after every session but I truly hate it. I rather enjoy shooting them though.
Through the years, I think that I have seen more guns that were damaged by over cleaning (bore/muzzle wear from steel rods) and over oiling (soft, oil soaked wood around the action) than by under cleaning. Both my grandfathers, who started shooting with black powder and corrosive primers were of the fire one shot, tear it down completely and scrub it, but I don't follow that practice with modern ammo.

And what you are describing are people that do not know enough to take care of their firearms correctly. Steel Rods? Over Oiling? Pay attention and do it right; aluminum & brass rods (bore snakes are nice, too), check your firearms for oil migration every so often. Wipe them down after handling. My Grandfather taught me to respect the firearms we have; and his Winchester Model 68 that I inherited after my dad still looks and works great!

Yeah I'm more sw Florida area. I go to Babcock/Cecil Webb wildlife refuge. They have a couple indoor ranges much closer to me but they cost as much for one day as it is for the whole year at Babcock. Plus I don't mind the drive. When I just go shooting pistols it makes for a nice bike ride.
I'm not sure that either of my grandfathers ever saw an aluminum or a brass cleaning rod. All I ever remember seeing at their houses sixty years ago were one piece steel rifle rods, and wooden shotgun rods.
we have at least five ranges within 10 miles or so, but only one outdoor range... the closest range to me is indoor, and is the cheapest - works out to about $3 per visit (based on 1- to 2X a week), unlimited time... another range is very nice, good folks, and you get a punch card for 10 free visits w/gun purchase... the 3rd closest is most expensive $15/hr, and staffed by a55hats who play butt-sniffing
i would love to have mr. smokeless j's range available locally!

LHB - Yeah, I didn't mean that aluminum or brass cleaning rods were available everywhere or afordable by everyone, it is just the idea that you shouldn't use any old thing trying to do the right thing. My Grandfather showed me early on how to clean his Winchester using a brass beaded chain, pulling the brushes and patches thru from the breach end. He didn't have a brass rod either, but still understood that good maintenance and care were never out of reach or necessity. :D
Man, I can feel everyone's pain having to spend money beyond the ammo and time to enjoy our toys. I have really lost touch with such costs. It was ~$200 to build by range backstop. That was a number of years ago. It hasn't cost me a thing since. I just have lost touch with range prices since my son has moved back to Ohio from Virginia a couple of years ago, where I always paid the range price for two slots and the short hour we spent at his local range (which wasn't that local!). Bad enough when one spends $0.20 to $1 per bang, but to have to add range fees . . . . . (Like my buddies that play golf; they complain about green fees all the time; I tell them to come to my place to smack their balls around for free, but they don't appreciate the offer! 8))

this one shoots pretty accurately for my needs... the recoil is on a par w/a .38spc target load and the action - for a Charter - is smoother than i expected - although not as smooth as my Charter .38spl - go figure

The two 9mm revolvers I owned (both Rugers) used moon clips to hold the cartridge, does that pit bull use them or load directly?
Looks like direct load.

Nice. Now why can't Ruger do that :-\
as you experienced folks know, Smith made one (only 10,000 made though):

I never understood the need to put semi-auto rounds in revolvers...Aren't there enough good revolver rounds? 38=p is about the same as a 9mm; 357 tops them both. A 44 special certainly is more than equivalent to a 45. and even the mighty 10mm is ou classed by the 44 and 41 magnums...I get semi-autos and the use in a semi-auto pistol for the extra capacity but you lose that advantage in a revolver...
Please educate me.
BTW, I am a fan of Carter Arms, so no disrespect from me on the manufacturer.
'Why?' - that is a good question!
1. because you can
2. because it's different
3. because there's another semi-auto of same caliber in rotation
4. because the ammo is cheaper when spread across two platforms
of course, one might ask the same thing about a 327 Federal revolver (which shoots 5 different types of ammunition) or a .357 auto or a .22 mag auto pistol/rifle, etc.
if i had my own outdoor range i'd have an entire collection of various calibers and weapons - just because! it's fun!

You may be right. I however am a revolver guy, so no advantage that way. I do like the thought of the 327 Fm and 32 H+R in the same gun. Not sure I would go back as far as the 32 S+W...

different case type, different base and rim diameter (obviously .380ACP is a tad smaller); the .380 won't headspace properly and seats too low in the chambers (e.g. no ignition and no extraction)
loading 9mm into the pitbull's cylinder, one must slightly cant the cartridge outwards then slide it in - snug but secure and proper fit
extraction is buttery smooth with only a slight finger press required (i think this was part of the redesign from a 6-round cylinder to 5 rounds; i used 115gr FMJ reloads comprised of a half dozen or more brands, such as S&B, Perfecta, Winchester, CCI, Remington, Federal, GECO, Speer, and Fiocchi with no problems; the only problem with a single light strike was from a selection of 10-year-old Winchester FMJ white box from Wally World - possibly a lower-seated primer)

There was some nostalgia at the range today. My neighbor, Bob, and I both took some 9mm ammo out for a little exercise. He had his S&W semi-auto, I had my Pitbull, along with a pistol I hadn't used in nearly 21 years:
I still have an old target from the last time it was at the range. Almost five months after I retired, I went with a buddy (a fellow CWO3) to a range south of Quantico. It was run by Filipino ex-Army rangers who offered machine gun practice for $10/hr with the stipulation you had to buy the ammo there (smart buggers). So the last time I use my Belgian-made FN Hi-Power was Sept. 23, 1997. It got a lot of use at Quantico's rec-fire range those days, which was about a mile from the first home I owned. I also used to fish on Quantico's Lunga Reservoir, right around the bend from the FBI Academy.
My old friend ran just fine. Truly a shame that FN discontinued production last year. I thought it was an expensive item when I bought it ($580 if I recall). It's still in great shape and I think I'll take it out a bit more often.

hey folks...
enjoying the first bit of cooler weather down here (high of 85F today)... and I'm really enjoying my new Ruger 10/22 stainless takedown... I started off with the stock configuration, got the Williams optic iron sights sighted in, but found the Ruger scope base plate included w/the rifle obscured the sights. A 50-year-old Weaver D4 I had in a closet disintegrated when I tried to use it on the rifle (poor thing's plastic and adjustment pieces just crumbled - kinda sad as it was my first scope)
:(
So, i put in a 'see-thru' picatinny base and got a cheap Simmons 3-9X scope for plinking. The base and scope match the silver of the aluminum receiver and stainless barrel.
I did ditch the included Simmons rings and used a set of inexpensive Weaver rings (#49055, Quad-Lock, 1", Medium).
Sighting in the scope was easy; the Simmons doesn't require tools, you can use a penny to tighten the scope down, and the iron sights can be used when the scope is off the rails. It's just bright enough for this half-blind old codger, with fair-to-middling eye relief.
I removed the scope this weekend when I swapped the Ruger TD stock for the Magpul X22 Backpacker (awesome stock and it came with three 10-round rotary mags and free shipping!). With fingers crossed, I re-attached the scope in the same rail position, then went to the range this morning and ran the first 10 rounds using CCI standard velocity (1070fps, 40-grain LRN) through a clear rotary mag.
I made sure to first cycle the bolt several times before loading the magazine. After a couple deep breaths, here are the results:
I know it's no great feat at 25 yards, especially for an old dude leaning on his range bag and bent over with his alpha sierra sierra hanging out.
But I'm pretty happy, and much more so knowing that the barrel maintained accuracy and that the scope retained zero. This is stinkin' cheap fun!

Willie,
I'd be very happy with that shooting/grouping out of a takedown. I'm no marksman, but that's about what I'm (currently) getting out of my Savage bolt action at the same distance. The picture below is a ten shot group. It's still not back to where I expect it for NRL22, but it's pretty close.
Good shooting Willie. What color magpul stock did you get?
tks, Mr. Meek and Mr. HT... got the black stock (same as the Ruger factory stock)... i like the X22 as it came with two butt stock covers - the default is higher than the other and offers a better hold and sight picture for me... of course, the great things about the stock are the grip, that the barrel and forearm clip together, that you can store three 10-round rotary mags in the butt, and that the grip has a locking water-resistant storage plug on the bottom (penknife, matches, batteries, etc. can be stored)... if there's a downside it's that Magpul wants an arm and a leg for push-button sling adapters (i think Grovtec makes a cheaper set)
having fun with this 10/22... wish i had one years ago, but i guess better late than never...

I'd be happy with either of those targets willie and bill. I've packed for the range tomorrow but I did that a week ago and decided not to go. I'm feeling a bit more motivated this go round. Wanna try and get in and out early and with any luck I'll be supporting 45 at his rally tomorrow night.

tks for the linky - however, the stock also needs the QD cups! i think i found paired cup/swivel that may work:
https://www.amazon.com/GrovTec-GTSW295-Heavy-Button-Swivel/dp/B004Y7DW0U (https://www.amazon.com/GrovTec-GTSW295-Heavy-Button-Swivel/dp/B004Y7DW0U)
alternatively, since a sling isn't that important to me at the moment, i may just use one of these:

(it would fit around the grip)
i just wish Magpul had at least included the cups in the stock, but i guess there are 1/4" and 1/2" QD swivels?

That was my very first gun Warty. Single shot 22 short long and lr. The front sight was kinda bent to the left but once I figured that out I got a little more accurate.
Just like ME except mine was a Mossberg, very cool Joe!
Just like us old timers, your Ithaca still could perform! Ah . . . nice AR, too. ;D

I built a couple of these tables that fold up for use on the range. I primarily use them at my own range, but a local public range I have used has no such tables, just std. dirt mound backstops, with no place to load or keep your toys out of the mud.
Great idea!! Way better than what I do...
I bought a nice folding table to use at the range, mine is outdoor only. It has been great too. I can use it as a rest for longer distances, range goes to 500 yards, and also just to keep my firearms out of the dirt. 8)
So Joe, how did the Ithaca do for you? My Old Mossberg runs like a top still.

It fired fine. My front sight has gotten bent over the years. I was shooting to the right of the bullseye at 25 yards. I tried to make a minor adjustment in the field but didn't want to overdo it and snap it off (fixed sight) I'll take another look at it later and see if I can get her back in order.
Cool beans Joe, it does look like a nice firearm, just get the sights worked out and it will be as good as the day you got it.

Hows the difference in the trigger pulls , never had a disappointing shoot with my Rugers (pistols or rifles) , heck with my 10/22 I can consistently shoot tack heads holding up the target at 50 feet . Rugers shoot just as well as Smiths if not a little better out of the box , both being fine shooters .
ov trigger is real good with the browing s@w is a hair trigger i did 15 years ago i believe the difference is scopes when i had the s@w scope on browing i thought the guns where close the s@w scope is 2.5 moa @ the browing 5.0 to tell the difference is that 1inch dot in the middle with the 2.5 moa you can see the color all around with the 5.0 you cover it i dont aim a red dot like a rifle when dot on target fire i was going to ask all the guys i have 7 red dots there 5 years old i was going to ask if anyone tried the new 2x power hand gun red dots mine are all 1x
hey folks - having a beautiful, sunny 75F day down here in the near Tropics - after a nice breakfast of scrambled eggs w/ketchup i toodled over to a nearby range and gave a new wheelgun a shakedown cruise with some 158 grain GECO goodness... here are the first five rounds out of the box at 15 feet (i first made sure to ensure the set screw on the rear Novak sight was tight and did a little polish of the brass bead; i'll tighten down the set screw using some VC-3 after cleaning)... i'm gonna guess i don't need to adjust the sights? i also did some paper shredding using .38spl at 21 and 30 feet - quite happy with the way rounds seem to slingshot out of the 'Tank':
GREAT LINUX!
Still too cold here plus it is supposed to rain and snow and likely freezing rain as the day goes one. Have fun in FL, it isn't for me. I like the snow and weather here since seasons are something I like. ;)
Yep, no need to adjust the sights.
hey folks - beautiful 82F sunny day here in the Near Tropics. After a teeth scraping at the vet, i was off to the range to see if i could loosen some 50-year-old fillings. I think the .38 Special is kinda interesting. I understand it was first introduced in 1898 in response to the inadequacy of the .38 Long Colt against Filipino Muslim warrior shields in the Philippine War, and that the last major change was by the FBI in 1972 with the introduction of .38 Special +P. Not bad for a self-defense round that today seems as good as it was more than 100 years ago?

tks, but as we all know i'm just a plinker and crusty old f**t and only do 5, 7, and 10 yard practice with my pocket mice and subbies... the surprise for me today was that there was keyholing at 5 yards, but at 7 yards, same gun, same ammo no keyholing! peculiar?
as far as the .357, from what i gathered on Wikipedia the .357 magnum was first introduced in 1934, and was developed by Smith & Wesson and the NRA, with the purpose of penetrating car doors and early ballistic vests used by bootleggers and gangsters.
i like the .357 out of the Ruger SP101, which is kinda funny as i once had a S&W 28 and sold it because it was not fun and painful to shoot... the Ruger on the other hand is very comfortable
i had so much fun with the .38s that i went back to the veteran-owned reman business i frequent and bought another 500 rounds - good stuff - quite consistent for me

Saw a guy was arrested for the planning of attacks on Liberals. Yeah, he was a nutcase, and needed to be arrested for the threats, but the media was focused on his guns and ammo. They kept saying and showing that he had 15 guns (some shown were BA rifles, and a couple of handguns) and the fact he had over 1000 rounds of ammo...If that is what makes him nuts, I think we are all in trouble...I saw it reported on CBS news.

No OV not me LOL. If that is all this man has it would not even be close to enough to qualify from just one of the vaults. In addition to this, 1000 rounds of ammo is not even enough for me to take to a training class, let alone keep on hand for shooting/training. Amateur by my recollection. 8)
If that stash qualifies him as a terrorist then I would have to qualify as something akin to an entire Caliphate. :P

One of my former co-workers came in one morning, all upset, had heard on the news that a local man had been arrested, he had three guns, and 150 rounds of ammunition. He wanted to know why any one needed that much ammo. I reminded him that he had said that as a youngster he had hunted with his father and brother, and knew a little about guns, and that 150 rounds od ammo meant that the man had two boxes of shotgun shells, and two boxes of .22, and his response was, "That's not that much." He was hyped up due the media's wording, and tone used.
The media and the way people see others and the way our government compiles list of people who they feel should be watched is a really big joke. IDK not do I ever think I could even think the way they do enough to feel like they do.
There was a time a person who owned some firearms and who had some ammo and wrote to the government to tell them how they felt on subjects that were up for vote USED to be considered a PATRIOT.
Schools used to teach children about the Constitution and their Rights. Now, it is all something that no one is taught nor do they feel a person is a Patriot unless their car is covered in little US Flags and ribbons of various colors and a bunch of bumper stickers. :'(
Now it seems that folks just want a lot of "Reality" TV, because they no longer live in a reality that resembles any that I do. Our country is circling the drain. IDK exactly when Jesus will return but it does seem like it will be soon. OOPS!, wrong forum, forgive me please.

it will be interesting to see if he really violated any laws - i do know there are restrictions on government computer use, but as anyone who has worked in the federal government in Washington DC knows, the civil servants there watch porn, shop online, and play on social media all day long at their office desks - DC is a vast welfare state for the 'locals'

hey folks - having a great time on the sunny and warm Gulf of Mexico... went directly to the range after picking up a new revolver - the Charter Arms .380ACP Pitbull - no moon clips! i ran 50 rounds of reman FMJ and 40 rounds of S&B FMJ with no real problems... the reman required one or two shells to be urged out with a small wood dowel (not really stuck, just ended up underneath the extractor; all factory rounds dumped out w/no probs)...
i really, really tried to punch out the bullseye, but my Pitbull missed a few chomps! target was at my normal 21 feet, single and double action... had to hold on top of the bull and a little to the right, but that's my grip and pull (i'm really trying hard to work on shooting better):

I used to Willie, but not much these days. Never owned one but I had a lot of friends who did and we would blow all our money on the cheapest but they were also rounds that worked well in the firearm, and then just make huge piles of brass to clean up. I really enjoyed it too.
Now, I tend to shoot a single action revolver the most though I do throw in semi-autos and such to the mix, but the rate of fire has slowed. I don't think I could even give an estimate of the number of rounds I shoot anymore. ???
we have a local club that meets once a month at the nearby outdoor range... last night it was a rep from Dead Air:

as an aside, this Ruger was a @#%@#%! to get apart the first time for cleaning... had to use a bamboo rod to tap the trigger assembly down and out... but over the last half-dozen cleanings, things have gotten a lot easier...
i'm really liking .38SPL as of late... little to no recoil out of these little tanks...

here's the target from breaking in the Firefly bolt on one of my Charger pistols... 25 yards with a cheap red dot - and you can see, the shots are all over the place, but it settled in after 100 rounds... i think it was a combination of a new barrel, a new bolt, and the dolt holding the pistol:

yep, it's a .357 SP101... i also have a Wiley Clapp version w/the dove-tailed Novak front and rear sights... but wouldn't you know, right after i got it, i found the second SP101 used for $350 less? previous owner must not have liked it due to cylinder lockup after shooting a few chambers of .357... some 2000-grit on the offending out-of-tolerance portion of the cylinder face fixed it tout de suite, and now it's my in my top-5 favorite wheelguns...

You said the trigger on the .357 SP101 is pretty smooth. Any of yours have the lighter Wolff springs? I put them in my two SPs, 2.25 inch .357 and the newer 8 round .22. Made a very nice improvement in both trigger pull and cocking effort. I used the middle option of each kit's three mainsprings, and the only trigger spring in the kit.

- i did use the Wollf springs in my SP101 .22LR (hammer and trigger), and i *think* also my Wiley Clapp .357 (hammer only, didn't mess around with the trigger)... i think i was, like you, conservative in the pull weight (didn't want any light-striking action)
btw, the Wiley Clapp Ruger frame/trigger assembly was machined with such tight tolerances that i had a devil of a time doing a first-time break-down for cleaning... i used a rubber mallet and bamboo dowel to get it apart
can't remember about my found-used SP101 .357... IIRC, it was good-to-go as found (with the exception of the slight fix for chamber clearance on one cylinder), and disassembled easily for first-time use... i think the original owner only put a few cylinders through it - it was in that good a shape... one of my best used-gun purchases...
the Ruger wheelgun is mighty fine... i'll never again buy a Smith unless it's old-style... i made that mistake with my 317 kit gun, and immediately put in a lock-delete and threw away the lock mechanism and key (it's not a collector's item and i don't give a romeo-alpha 'bout weapons in general - none of 'em are shelf queens, and that includes my pristine FN Browning High Power... i keep 'em clean, but not 'Marine-clean'...
i have a couple old Colt .357s, which are even better than Smiths (IMHO), so i'm good on low-caliber (.357 and lower) wheelguns...

No the mini is @ 5 yds. I start the Charter Arms @ 7. Altogether I shot the BW at 5, 7 and 10 yds. I shot the Charter Arms at 7, 10, 15 and 20.
Then I do a rapid fire with the Charter Arms at 7 and 10 yds. A 4" barrel makes it more accurate at longer ranges...I still need to get out more though. The Charter Arms has a new rear sight set coming. Old one doesn't stay put.
Hi Canoeal,
Does your Charter revolver have a problem? From the number of "keyhole" bullet strikes on that target, I wonder if your bullets are tumbling?
Have the Charter's targets always looked like that?
I just wonder what's going on.
Happy trails,

No just the wrong ammo. Maxi Mags seem to do that in that gun. Hornadys do that in my BW sometimes. Gold Dots work better in both. I think it has to do with the slower burning rifle round burning powder as they exit. Maxi Mags are real flame throwers. The MM Hp+Vs with the 30 gr hp seem to do fine too. Just an ammo issue.

hey folks - took a new one out for a run this morning... i have been looking for one for a while, and while chatting with my LGS about how expensive MK frames were and that i was looking for a used pistol (due to having an extra MK III stainless non-threaded barrel), he pulled me into the workshop and convinced me to walk out with a new consignment: a Ruger MK II Competition Target slabside w/a threaded barrel, compensator, target grips, an extra set of Herrett National grips, Ruger scope mount and scope rings, and six magazines... the only thing i replaced was the recoil rod and spring (pistol worked fine, just didn't like the look of the worn assembly); initially ran 200 rounds of Rem Goldens, M-22s, CCI SVs, and Aguila Super Extras - no failures... this morning i ran 18 mags of Aguila Super Extra (12 MK III mags) with zero failures... started off slow with what i think are good results at 10 yards, then finished up with some rapid-fire at 7 yards suppressed (groups loosened up thru the SOS-22 V2, but i'll try my Odessa 9 next time):
For that Ruger you need to get the Mc Fadden Ultimate clip loader.
It makes loading as fast as unloading!
Dump in fifty rounds shake it tilt it up for gravity to feed the rounds.
Amazon can have it there in a day.
The perfect Christmas gift!
Got to the range today, only to find they are closing the end of the month...Now I need to find a new indoor range.
Got my Wasp today...after I came back from the range...
Fine shooting.
Those grips will look really good on that Wasp.

Congrats on the wasp Al. I like the grip design.

that is sad... we have four ranges - three indoor and one outdoor - within 15 minutes of the casa - one less range is a bad thing...
i had the chance to re-settle elsewhere about seven years ago... in some ways i'm glad i didn't but in other ways i wish i had moved and bought land to have my own range...

Ok so I did get to the range today...But I did not shoot the NAAs very well. Light strikes on my BW...new Wasp figuring the sights.
The TP shot well...hey, at least I got there; maybe 1 more time before the range closes.

light strikes a spring issue or ammo?
Spring issue. Already boxed to go. It started a little last session. Waited for the new Wasp, so my pocket wasn't empty...

She'll be good as new before you know it. Did you like the feel of the wasp after having the Black Widow for so long?
You got to go shoot and hit the paper.
OK, things didn't go perfectly. But I smell happiness.
I smell gunpowder!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! 8)

The Wasp was a little hard to get used to. The recoil was a little different being lighter, and the sight picture was difficult to figure out. After I realised the light I was using was off to my left, I got it to shoot better. Go figure...It will come around, the BW after everyday for 3 years feels like an old friend...I am sure this will too.
Still need to do the water jug test...
Just remember which is which.
Like right after you marry your second wife, don't call her by your first wife's name. Makes them hostile.
On that count I will have to take your word; been married to the same woman 43 years, and wouldn't change a thing about that.
Me and mine have been together 41 years now.

Indoor range is closing after tomorrow. So I snuck out today with the Wasp and the CA...
Wasp is still stiff. harder to cock than my BW ever was (so far). another 45 rounds in the Wasp taking it to 90.
I am getting better with the sights. I may try an adjustment to seeing them.
The Charter Arms does fine.
Pics are of the 5 yard Wasp target, and the 7 yard Charter Arms.
Now to find a new home to shoot...
Doing good.
That would make them stop and think.
I'd find those acceptable results especially while getting familiar with the new gal
Just don't feel like shooting today. Photo just before 8am, 30 degrees.
I have no idea what that picture is ???
Says he didn't feel like shooting. Maybe taken while lying on his driveway after a rough night.....
Picture of snowy driveway while holding android phone vertical. Emailed to iPad. Uploaded using what is to me a new option on forum to select the file size (small). It always looked right side up to me, no idea why it is not right side up now and don't feel like messing with it more.

update: our local outdoor range is closed for two weeks starting today
our local outdoor range is open... the other one across the street, an indoor range, was mobbed on Sunday by nearly a hundred first-time buyers... i didn't even bother going in...
Got out to the range
Some of the best times shooting and what got me heart really beating was SASS Cowboy Action Shooting. Talk about fun and being out shooting with a great bunch of guys. If you haven't tried it its really something to look into for a fun weekend of shooting.Unfortunately I can't do it anymore :-[ health issues make it impposible for me do it it now days. Was great when I could do it.
Sounds like you had a good time WG. The range that I spend most of my time at is currently closed until May 1st. Hopefully it will reopen as scheduled.
Here's some footage of my friend Josh and I at the range recently with the S&W 500 and CZ Shadow 2.

Rattlehead that's some real fine shooting , WOW . Just like you do for a living shooting .Excellent placement . ;)

Thanks man! I could actually tighten those groups up significantly if I slowed down a bit. The Shadow also makes me look like a much better shot than I really am. lol
hey folks... well, all our local ranges are up and running... the wife unit left for her salon appt after breakfast, so i snuck off to the range across the street for a little quiet time with my FrankenRuger and LCP II 22... hope everyone is doing well:
Ain't it great Linux shooting those extra rounds of 22 . Knowing that gun is a man killer and being silent (almost) kinda melts ones heart , doesn't it . Myself I'll never ever give up my Rugers (the quiet one holds a special spot) the others for that fact .
Wumbey , everyone should have your backyard setup . Kudos to you .
:(I went up to my favorite spot to shoot Saturday and the Local Sheriff was there telling people to leave as theres a ban on shooting right now :( I guess with the fire danger on high its a good idea. Ben Avery is open but its reservations only for now. So guess I'll be home making knife cases for now ;)
hey folks - 'round these parts we're back onto regular ops at the ranges (with the exception of wearing a mask at the indoor range)... found a really nice threaded barrel for my Browning Hi-Power - an Alpha Wolf satin stainless... it was a drop-in, no smithing required on my FN model (dunno about other makers)...
put on my Odessa-9 and had some fun w/S&B FMJ... hope everyone is safe and healthy!
While at the rage the other week I was walking out to the hundred yd targets with the shooter to replace mine. The guy next to me was shooting some black rifle in 6.5 Creedmore. He was very proud of his group; which was about 2.5" in diameter, about 7.30 2" off the whole 12" target. I said nice group, but in a firefight you missed. He did not find that amusing...Just think a scoped up 6.5 misses, while peep sights in 22 mag lever action, had a much larger group all in the target. Some how though, my target had a 30 cal hole in it too. Not his 6.5 but a .30 cal hole.
Kinda reminds me of the old story of the guy who brought into a gun store his "like new" deer gun that he wanted to trade. When asked why, he siad that it wouldn't shoot to where he aimed, had shot at four deer, and hadn't touched one of them. When asked if he had checked the zero on his scope, replied, "I don't have to do that, they do that at the factory."
did a nice walk in a local park, then went across the street to get Rugerized... 100 Rem Gold range chiclets, zero failures... really glad i bought two of these and 10 mags early this year:
Great Little gun I have an SR22 which I really like, tad bigger then the LCP but a ball to shoot. :)
I also had a .22LR day at the range today with a buddy (that's him with his CZ).
A reactive gong for pistol at 12yds, 12ga hulls placed on the target stands at 25 and 50yds, a spinner at 75 and an old kitchen pan hanging at 100yds. BIG FUN!! My favorite is the empty 12ga hulls, not too hard at 25yds, a challenge for me at 50yds. Shot and told lies for 2 1/2 hrs, finally got cold, then out for lunch. Finest kind of day!
Be well all, Steve in Boise

Yep, lots of babies IN BOISE, not the rest of the state. They've elected a liberal demtard mayor.
Spouse and I think we may have one more move left in us, to a less citified part of Idaho. Effem.

More crap form Commy CA
SAN JOSE, CA ? A California city has voted to require gun owners to carry liability insurance in what's believed to be the first measure of its kind in the United States.
The San Jose City Council overwhelmingly approved the measure Tuesday night despite opposition from some gun owners who said it would violate their Second Amendment rights.
The council also voted to require thousands of gun owners in the city to pay a small fee, which would be used for firearm safety education and services such as domestic violence prevention and mental health services.
Smokeless, you shot George Washington. What did he ever do to you? .... ;D
That San Jose "fee" is $25. I guess all the criminals can claim they're unemployed and get a discount. The new laws start August 1; one gun rights group has already filed a lawsuit.

OH NO !!! Smokeless you could have gotten , especially in another decade or so , better than a thousand buckaroos for the MM dude . Myself years back , many (50 at least), I shot up a three-four foot Auroura model maker Frankenstein (with chain on rock) window display model that today is beyond worth I figure . The things we do to show our accuracy , myself I could kick myself . It was given to me by an sales executive from the corporation when it was in business . I probably could retire on that piece ,dumbas* me as a teenage kid . The shame engulfs me . ;) ;) ;) ;) ;) ;)
The m&m dude was already damaged OV-1D. We just put it out of its misery, but there?s room for more damage in the future. A friend has about 50 plastic mannequin torsos that we need to get out there. One will end up in the drivers seat before we shoot out the windshield ;D
On a side note. My email notifications for the forum haven?t been coming thru for a couple weeks. Maybe even longer. Just realized that today. Everyone else getting them ok?
???
Respectable
went out to shoot yesterday 10 degrees had to shoot new 12 home defense gun with red green blue dots 4 different shapes plus put a green laser on it you wont believe what i paid for semi gun $119 scope @ laser cost more have shot 125 rounds out of it no hiccup 2high brass 123 low brass

5 yards out.
How much damage to the dock? Looks like it was the backstop.
