Title: Federal 50 grain 22 magnum jhp
Post by: Uncle Fatso on September-27-18 07:09
Have any of youse guys tried the above captioned ammo in your mini?  There seems not to be much in the way of reviews on the innerwebs for the stuff.  I have a friend who seems tothink it's swell stuff. Bought myself a box to see what I think.

Here is a you tube video. It appears to have fairly good pentration, but no expansion out of a PMR 30.

The second one shows Gold Dots, and these 50 grains out of a Black Widow...

I bought a few boxes of the 50 grain Federals.  Don't see as it is any better than most of the 40-45 grain ammo.  None of it really expands.  I like the Hornady 45 grain Critical Defense when you can find it.  I shoot both the B/W's and the Pug, as well a a couple of Ruger Single Nines, one with the stock 6 1/2 barrel and one I had cut down to a 4 1/2 barrel.  Only 30 grain ammo I have was bought when there was a shortage of 22 Mag ammo, bought it for everyday plinking.  Try to keep plenty of 22 Mag on hand in case the Demoduds get back in power, which would start another shortage.

You are right Uncle  Fatso,  the Federal 50 grain JHPs don't expand at all. Tried them out with my Pug yesterday. They deformed in hard packed sand,  penetrated
about 3 inches, but no expansion. They are good on an empty Coke can @ 10 ft.

The Federal 50 gr JHP don't expand in water-filled milk jugs when fired through a 6 1/2" barrel Ruger Single Six either. I buy them because they shoot closer to point of aim at 50 ft in two of my Fixed-Sight Single Sixes. It's hard to beat the old Winchester 40 gr. JHP for accuracy, velocity, penetration and expansion. Thank goodness prices and availability have improved lately.

Best Regards,
