I never let the hammer fall into the safety notch. I guide it slowly with my thumb while holding the cylinder with the other hand (so the notch stays aliened) then after I think the hammer has seated I attempt to turn the cylinder to make sure it seated. Then I double check by looking to make sure there is a half chamber on each side of the hammer while attempting to turn the cylinder again.
As everyone has said, practice until you think you got it, then practice some more. Always with it unloaded.
