IT"S A NEW DAY

zburkett

Carrying around the farm when I expect to need to shoot a snake in the head, I carry my LR mini with CCI Quite.  When I go to town and am carrying my pistol for more social occasions I put in the Mag cylinder.

Canoeal

The 22 mag has higher velocity, and more muzzle energy than any 22 LR What it amounts to is this double the powder and a 5% heavier bullet, and half again the penetration. Probably all you need to know. But if you go the NAA website pages they give you some ballistic info (at least the velocity) for the different Guns check the 22 version vs the 22 mag version of the same gun.

Essentially and this is a generalization you get 22 Long rifle ballistics when using 22 mag ammunition in a pistol, it all depends on round and individual firearm.

Example
Out or a Ruger 10/22 18.5" barrel a 29grain long rifle bullet is going 1063 fps=73fpe

Out of NAA Sidewinder 1.5" barrel a 30grain magnum bullet is going 1175fps=92fpe

Out of NAA Sidewinder 1.5" barrel a 36 grain CCI mini mag long rifle is going 908fps=66fpe

Ruger 10/22 18.5" barrel CCI 40 grain Velocitor long rifle 1304fps= 151fpe

Ruger 10/22 18.5" barrel CCI mini mag 40 grain long rifle 1199fps= 128fpe

Ruger 10/22 18.5" barrel Winchester 40 grain super x long rifle 1237fps=136fpe

NAA Sidewinder 1.5" barrel Winchester 40 grain super x long rifle 855fps=65fpe

The fastest 40 grain magnum rounds I've tested out of the Sidewinder's 1.5" barrel  are the Speer Gold Dots average 948fps=80fpe
And the fastest 30 grain magnum round going to the Winchester 30 grain Varmint HV average 1176fps=92fpe

Here are some of my .22lr and .22mag results out of 1.5" NAA, I'll be doing the Pug and 32acp when spring arrives or a break in weather.

Why not just carry .22WMR shotshells?  My "first up" is a shotshell and the rest hollowpoints.  I keep at least one spare shotshell in the little DeSantis holster ammo pocket.  I've heard that there are stories of two-legged perps that have been disabled by a facefull of shot from a mini, so I won't even worry about rotating the cylinder one notch should I get into a defensive confrontation.

Django is that 30 grain HV the WINS22M2PT? What is the rated velocity on the ones you tested and got 92fpe ? I have a chance to purchase some Winchesters and wondered if it was the same ones you tested. I already have Gold Dot, and 250 rounds of Hornady Critical defense. I have the CCI solid 40 grains I use for target. But it sounds like the 30 grain does quite well. Take care and thanks for the info you provide on the Sidewinder.

zburkett

Price is relative.  I just bought a box of mags for what I would have paid for long rifles a couple of years ago,

Django2442

Lemon, yes, rated 2250fps(rifle), here's a pic of the package for the visual, I have some 35 grain rated 2100fps (rifle) I'm hoping will give positive results, haven't had a chance to test yet.

ronald arand

Django if you have the chance how about the CCI V22 mag for a test.

Alleycat,
First welcome to the forum.
The 22 magnum load is not one to be dismissed lightly. It has plenty of punch especially in the new loadings.

I use the lr cylinder for lots of practice and occasionally fire the magnums to familiarize myself with the more powerful loading.

I place the targets at about 10 feet as that distance and less is the usual self defense distance.

Now that you have one Mini, when are you going to get another??????

Let us know how you do on the range with your new mini.

You commented "all the way"   Airborne??

Ronald, I'm not familiar with the round you are referring to, is it one of these the 30 grain CCI Maxi-Mag 22WMR HP+V or the CCI 30 grain V max? If so I have the results for those and many others in the link I provided at the bottom of my post above.

Maxi-Mag 30 grain 22WMR HP+V
Sidewinder 1.5" barrel
Average 1100.7fps=81fpe

CCI 30 grain V max
Sidewinder 1.5" barrel
Average 1014.3fps=69fpe

Zburkett was wondering what kind of results you have had first hand with the CCI quiet, I had bought it for the reasons you've stated particularly with fox, but it rang my bell pretty good out of my Sidewinder and chronographed at 575=29fpe with the 40 grain segmented, so I just carry my mini with magnums on my land most of the time.

ronald arand

I believe it is a fairly new round it has what CCI calls a 35 gr game point. Rated 2100 fps out of a rifle . I read that CCI developed a new powder to get    more velocity without a higher pressure. I have also read on 1 review where it chroned 2225 fps, higher than advertised.

I have the CCI A22 Magnum 35 grain game point 2100fps that I'm going to be testing weather permitting, seems to be the same specs. I'm interested to see what they clock in at, I'd like to see 1200fps but I'm guessing closer to 1100fps.

I think this is the article you referenced, if so it's the A22 and I have and will be testing them.

ronald arand

Yes that is the article, thanks.

Django2442

I've had the rounds for a while, I keep getting hit with snow and other obligations, as soon as I can I'll test them.

zburkett

The choice of rounds has a lot to do with the expected threat.  In the barn the expected threat is a snake or a coon or possibly a fox.  For any of those a CCI Quite is good for a head shot.  If I cant make the head shot I won't try.  Out on the farm it might be a hog or something else bigger so I carry a mag, same for going to town.  When I hear a ruckus of course I grab the 12 to go investigate.  If I expect a human threat I call 911 and let a deputy worry about it.  If it should be one of those "when seconds count, the police area only minutes away" situations I'll take what is in my pocket and hope it is at least the mag.  Bottom line, what's in your pocket is what you are going to use.  So make your choice on what you expect to need.

grayelky

Almost all 22 mag is designed for a rifle length barrel. Hornady Critical Defense (45 gr) and Speer Gold Dot (40 gr) are 2 exceptions. They are designed to be fired in a 2" barrel. The testing I have done with them gives the Hornady a very slight edge in penetration. I have also seen a noticeable reduction in muzzle flash in dim light when using these 2 vs other mag rounds. Everyone has their favorite, and for valid reasons. These two are mine. I suggest you conduct your own testing and see what you think will work best for you. One thing that is a fact: the mag round does produce higher velocity than the LR round. If you drop the LR down n bullet weight, it will get very close, but you sacrifice penetration, which is extremely important, according to the FBI.

Thanks Django. I will purchase some of them now after seeing the test results you had with the Sidewinder. I checked yesterday and they still had a few in stock. I will also await and see your test results with the A22. They had three bricks of them back in December but of course they are gone now.

with the speers and hornad designed for 2inch barrells ( i have the speers)
is it still ok to shoot other types of mag loads in the naa 1 5/8 barrel ?
is there any damage that can be done to the firearm,  or just xcessive muzzel blast

they wont do any harm. the ammo designed for short barrels is supposed to raise the fps out of short barrels.

Does anyone know the appox. most effective range of most standard 22 rifle magnums ? Just how far out there can one so to say touch someone (within four inches lets say) ? Of course a scope is used .

Typically, 150 yards is reasonable, depending on the target. Paper, of course, could be longer.

With a good scope and rifle? 400 yards or longer. But there are a lot of variables, such as wind, humidity, temperature, altitude, etc. But with practice and a good spotting scope and spotter,400 yards on s steel 8x8 inch target is certainly do-able, even with 22lr. I have a Savage MarkII that can do it, but I definitely need a fairly hi-powered scope, as I can't even see the target that far away! A torso sized target is no problem, as long as it isn't windy. There are some intetesting videos on YouTube about 22lr penetration at those distances that are truly impressive!

I'd love to have one, and thought I did a couple of months ago. By the time I was able to get in touch with him, he wanted $700.00. I passed.
