Wasp Hammers

I asked a question about the Banger's Pug with the Wasp cylinder and hammer several days ago. One of the replies mentioned there could be issues with the skeletonized Wasp hammer. Have there been issues with the Wasp hammer and should purchasing minis with this hammer be avoided?
Thank you,
Andy Styron

I am by no means an expert but I have put quite a few rounds thru my wasp and have had no issues with it whatsoever. It's also the one I carry on the NAA buckle. Been carrying it like that for about a year I guess. So far so good. Having said that tho I'm guessing the skeletonized hammer may be more prone to damage over a solid one if it were dropped.

Thank you Smokeless Joe for the response. I knew I had not seen any problems mentioned before until I received the response that mentioned or questioned the skeletonized hammer.

Uncle_Lee

There have been some Wasp hammers that have broken.

I have a Wasp, and carry it daily since 2010, when they were introduced. It does not get shot a lot, but I am proficient with it. I own a gun shop, and will use my Wasp as a demo model to show to remove the cylinder, and how easily it can be fired 2 handed, without the cylinder. It I suspect it has been dry fired thousands of times. The hammer has failed once. I contacted NAA, and returned it for a free hammer. IF I had asked, they would have replaced it with a solid hammer, but chose to keep the skeleton hammer, as that is part of what makes the Wasp unique.

I am aware of about 3 actual reports on this forum about the hammer failing, including mine.

There you go Andy these two guys have been around much longer than I have so I'd take that into consideration. I know I'm happy with mine.

Many thanks for the responses to my question.

Mine is still good after four years....

Forgive the Zombie awakening. I thought it was relevant.

Adding mine to the list.  It did indeed break dry firing, but certainly not after "thousands of times", in my case.  More likely 50-70 over a couple years. And NEVER dropped. I also have a Black Widow, which I carry frequently, and it has been dry fired several hundred times, and 100 or so times, live fired. Solid as a rock.

I bought a really cool new holster for the Wasp, figured I'd be carrying it more now, and was acclimating myself to the feel of the smaller pistol.

Customer service responded next day with a return shipping label, and it's in the "mail".  I asked for a standard style hammer this time, as functionality trumps aesthetics, although I did choose the Wasp originally cause it's Purty. ;D

An update on the Banger's Pug with the Wasp skeletonized hammer. The hammer on my Pug exploded while I was dry firing the pistol trying to become accustomed to drawing if from my pocket holster. It was fixed by NAA customer service but I was required to pay for the shipping by the FFL that I purchased the pistol from to send it to NAA. Hopefully, the second hammer will be stronger but I have not been dry firing the pistol since it's repair.

Hi Andy.  I was the post right above yours, with the broken Wasp skeletonized hammer.  I asked for a standard magnum hammer as a replacement in my work order request.  It is due to be returned Monday, according to FedEx.  No comment from NAA on my request. Hoping for the solid hammer, as per.

Did you get the skeletonized hammer on your repair?

I'm looking forward to getting mine back!  ;D

I was under the impression that we weren't supposed to dry fire a rimfire revolver. Did I get that wrong? I bought snap caps for all the calibers I use, rimfire or not.

I did not ask NAA to repair my Banger's Pug with the solid hammer. I wanted the hammer replaced with the skeletonized hammer that it was produced to have. I did think about asking for the solid hammer but it would have changed the look of the Pug I searched to find. Thanks for the response.

Yep, I do not dry fire on an empty cylinder...

When ever I make it to the range, I usually come home with a couple of cylinders full of fired brass.  Each piece of brass can be use many times before it is too bad to support the firing pin and must be changed.  Have fun with your mini.

Yep, I have a large pretzel jar of spent 22 mag...Use it for dry fire and to practice trigger control, with the bore laser in my 4" CATP.

Seems a little confusion may exist. I do not dry fire any mini with the cylinder in place. It will damage the cylinder and hammer. I had a fellow bring his wife's BW back to the shop with the all 5 chambers and the hammer totally chewed up. He then tried to tell me it was like that when his wife bought it. Surprisingly nay to him, I did not take his comment well. I did return it, and NAA repaired it, no charge. I offered to cover the expense, but was told it was warranty. I let the clown think HE was going to have to cover all charges -right up till he came to pick it up.

I work with the public and it's amazing the stories you will hear in regards to why the product is defective. Smh.

I have a new Wasp..picked it up fairly recently. Mine wears Real Stag Grips. Haven't been to range lately as it has been closed due to darn Corona Virus....but unless dropped on the hammer..something I try to avoid at all costs..I doubt that the hammer is all that fragile. I never dry fire my NAAs without removing cylinder or using empty cartridge casings.

I simply never dry fire them. Just as simple to stick some ammo in there and fire it.  ;D

Far suburbia, an hour NW of Philly. I would have been able to do that when I moved here 30 years ago. Not now, democrats from Philly are moving in. About 600 new homes a year in our township alone.

Well, I'm back. Not the OP, but the Zombie Thread Waker ;D.

And my Wasp is back, with the solid hammer, as requested! Not quite as pretty, but I'm happy!  Turn around time, 11 days!! Way to go NAA!!!

And as to dry firing, I mostly dry fire with the cylinder removed, but in this case, with a new style holster, I was practicing draw and fire, with snap caps.  I rotate them every couple cycles.
