Pug shoots 22lr better than 22mag

Finally got a 22lr cylinder for my pug.
The gun puts the 22lr in a much better group at 7 yards than the 22mags.
Is this normal?
I'm thinking maybe I should carry 22lr instead of the 22 mags because of the better accuracy.

In a self defense situation with an NAA mini, I'd assume you'd be more interested in power than accuracy. Certainly shot placement is very important in self defense, but NAA minis weren't really designed for distance shooting.

Of course, you need to be confident in what you carry, so it's your decision and nobody should presume to tell you what you should or shouldn't do. There definitely are some good .22LR rounds for carry. When I carry .22LR, I use Stingers. When I carry .22-Magnum, I carry Gold Dots.

It may be the extra blast of powder still burning when the bullet leaves the barrel with the 22 mags that are disturbing the bullets flight. What type of 22 mag are you using? If the 22 mag bullet is heavier it may not be stabilising in the barrel, the lead of the 22 LR might be engaging the rifling better, than a jacketed one.

Yeah, good point, try something else. I think Gold Dots are some of the best rounds for .22-Magnum carry, but there are plenty of choices.

i'm happy with the 22LR accuracy of my sidewinder, but now i just practice point shooting at 10 feet and am satisfied with 7-8 ring hits

i figure it's gonna take a couple thousand rounds to get really comfortable?

I would say it depends on how much less accurate the .22 mags are. If you are shooting 2" groups with the .22 LR and 4" groups with the .22 Mag then in a self defense situation what does it matter? Now if you cannot place all your shots on center of mass with the Mags but you can with the LR then we have a different situation.

If you can hit your aimed target with the Mags I would say stick with it and just practice a bit more.

Well put RogueTS1. I was thinking the exact same thing. I also agree with the comment about the extra powder that Redhawk4  made. I prefer carrying Gold Dot 22mag in my minis. My Beretta 21a is loaded with CCI Velocitors. I wouldn't have a problem with putting Stingers in it either though.

CCI Velocitors or Stingers in the 21a; my choices exactly.

For mine in order: Gold Dots, Hornady Critical Defense, the CCI Maxi Mag HP+V 30 grain. Seems to be the ones that work in my Black Widow.

The 22mags I was shooting were Speer Gold Dot short barrel 40gr.
The 22lrs were Remington Golden Bullet high velocity 40gr.
Like I said, at about 7 yards (or 20 feet) the 22mags go anywhere in a 6 to 7" circle or worse.
The 22lr seems to put them in more like a 2" circle. Which could just be me and not the bullets.
I like the extra power and blast of the 22mag but I like the accuracy of the 22lr better.
