I used to have a lot of trouble with my background checks.  I called them and asked what was up, was told they would give me one of those special ID Numbers but unfortunately, neither IN nor IL use them, so the guy told me to put my SSN on the form and he would let them know it was me and all was well.  Haven't been delayed since then, I buy it and take it home. 8)

Sometimes there is no logical reason for a delay.  Once I was delayed because I didn't include my SSN# and NICS got a hit with someone from my state  with sort of the same name.  My middle name was the same as his first name.  Our last names were the same.  We were different ages, different races and lived in different counties but I still got delayed because he had a felony record.  I had to use some LE connections to finally get an explanation.  I have a CWP now so they don't even have to run the 4473 form through NICS anymore.  Good luck Spanky on resolving your delay.  Try calling your congressman.  It's election year and they want to keep their constituents happy.

i was in a LGS in Largo, FL on this past Monday w/my neighbor, Bob (who doesn't have a CWL) - i was there to pick up a pistol i had ordered on the Thursday before but that wasn't in stock (LGS found it locally in 24 hours - a stainless PT-22)

Bob bought a Ruger MK IV 22/45 from a display case... he picks it up tomorrow

Florida has a 3-day wait period but no wait period if you have a CWL (the way it should be)

So we're on the same side of the gulf. Always thought you were in Texas for some reason.

Found out what the holdup is!!!

Graduated tech school in the Navy at Great Lakes way back in 1965. Celebrating with beer at night in a field with the other guys and police came. There was a record created and it came up on the background check. WOW! I was REALLY worried that someone had hacked my ID.............it was ME! Talk about a thorough check.

Bigbird48

So Spanky why have you not got your money back yet, its now over 5 weeks I would tell them either give you the gun or give me my money. The gun can't be that important to keep putting up with this BS. Theres no logical reason they couldn't check you out in this amount of time. Some ones giving you the run around , most likely your ffl, get you money back and go buy it somewhere else.

Spanky

Refunded. The FFL sent it back last week and Bud's Gun Shop has noted the receipt.

:'( Wish I had the gun, though.  I will repurchase once the background goes through.

Spanky

The record that was created in 1965 was not electronic (no such thing then). FDLE has requested that Illinois generate an e-copy so FL can see it. This is a manual thing.  Waiting on Illinois so who knows how long this could take.

grayelky

I hate to bring this up, but, you will find it out later anyway. THAT background check was for a specific gun. Since the money has been refunded, and the gun was sent back to Bud's, you will have to start all over from the beginning. At least, that is what Fed law dictates.

The wonderful person I talked to at FDLE told me that once this was complete that I could buy all the guns I want with no more issues. The check will become permanent in my "folder"??

postalman

What's up with Florida! First, you can't get your background check for weeks and now thousands get their CCW with no check!

Yep, Snowflakes everywhere.

Has anyone noticed? I just recently came across a thread on another site in regards to the alarm going off in one's house and it came to mind the difference in peoples' answers to said incident from years ago to today.

It seems to me that far more "gun" people these days seem to prefer to let the baddy go through there house uninhibited while they wait barricaded in their bedroom with their gun. It seems that not too many years ago a "gun" person would not give such license to the intruder and would make him pay for his insolence.

the barricade thing isnt going to work out too well if the intruder sets a fire to cover the burglary.

update: just got this in - apparently the story about lack of background checks is FALSE:

The media isn't getting it right and anti-gun Democrats don't want to get it right --  for some, it's all about attacking a candidate for political reasons. This issue is extremely important to all firearms owners and license holders.  Truth and facts matter, so here is what really happened.

THE FACTS:

The Division of Licensing under the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services (DOACS) did, in fact, do background checks on applicants for licenses to carry concealed weapons or firearms.

Background checks were done through FCIC (Florida Criminal Information Computer system) and NCIC (National Criminal Information Computer system -- the national FBI fingerprint data base) and they also did a NICS check (National Instant Check System), which is the name-based background check system.

The NICS system is the same system used by retail firearms dealers to do background checks when a person buys a firearm.

ALL THREE BACKGROUND CHECKS WERE DONE.

During the time the employee failed to do her job, approximately 350,000 applicants for carry licenses were processed. Of those 350,000, 365 had a disqualifier based on the NICS background check.

The employee should have uploaded those 365 into the internal computer system to stop the processing of those applications. She did not. So those 365 applicants got their licenses anyhow.

Although they got their licenses to CARRY firearms, they still would not have been allowed to purchase a firearm from a firearms dealer because the same NICS background check would have been performed by a dealer and would have stopped them from purchasing a firearm.

A license to carry does not exempt a person from the background check required when you purchase a firearm.  The license ONLY exempts a license holder from the 3-day waiting period.

When the Division discovered the problem, the employee was let go.  The Division then ran new background checks on all 365 applicants who initially had NICS name-based disqualifiers. Of those 365, 74 were cleared and 291 still had disqualifiers, so their licenses to carry firearms were immediately suspended.

THOSE ARE THE FACTS.  The facts don't fit narrative being pushed by the anti-gun political opponents of the Commissioner of Agriculture, Adam Putnam, who is a candidate for Governor.

In AZ having a CCW does exempt you from a background check. Walk in fill out the form walk out with gun. ;D

Linux,
It is such a shame that someone who has the responsibility to do the job, does not do it and the honest people suffer for it.

In my state (CT) a check was done on our licensing division and found that over 26,000 entries have yet to be made.  They are 6+ month behind.

The state increased their workload by 100% and reduced the staff.  Typical.

FINALLY

Florida approved it after all this time!!  So now it's a question of which mini.

All of this extra time has me going all over the mini spectrum. I currently carry a KTP3AT, so I need something smaller for like gym shorts. For light shorts carry is a 1 5/8 barrel or a 1 1/8 barrel preferable. I lean one way, then the next day the other way. I'm thinking 1 1/8 " now.

grayelky

In my pants pocket, I can't tell the 1 5/8 from the 1 1/8 barrel. My suggestion is the longer of the 2. Its not much, but the longer barrel will produce a little more velocity.

GREAT!!  Ordering 1 5/8. (Sort of wanted that one anyway   :))

FLORIDA--- Did any of you get caught up in the background check screw up?
Death before Decaf !!!!!

Bigbird48

Theres something that doesn't set right here  ???, you don't do the background check till after you bought the gun. We 've been telling you all along to get your money back and go elsewhere to buy the gun. Now your telling us you got a background check and your looking for the gun. Doesn't compute right.Your gonna go find a gun now and have to do the whole thing over again. Another thing you say you have a FL CCW You havr to do a Federal Background check to get a CCW, this whole thing sounds a little fishy to me. Is there something I'm missing here????

OLD and GRUMPY

Missing?  Florida!  Some Gov hack could not log in to the data base so they just cleared  checks and gave out guns. Now they are going around trying to get them back!  FLORIDA!  Even California laughs at them.

I bought the gun on line and it was delivered to an FFL locally. Background check stalled. Then after 5 weeks, without consulting me, he sent it back to get me a refund (and the on line store did that). Background check cleared, but no gun so I went to a LGS and ordered another. Guy at FDLE told me that the control number on the original gun was for THAT gun but that the resolution to the stalled check would be in my record so any other additional purchases will clear quickly.

I could have made that more clear, sorry 'bout that.  All is good  :)

ikoiko

I haven't researched this, so maybe take it with a grain of salt . . . During this lack of background checks (so says "yankee marshal") there was no/no significant uptick in firearms related crime.

Haven't checked it out as of yet. But if true, then it says something about the value of background checks.

autofull

that is just a shame. here in pa, ya walk in buy it and a few mins later ,after the nics check, out ya go. we love it.

Spanky

Wrap up.

Went to LGS and pointed to the NAA that I wanted in the display case. He took my driver's license, CCW license and credit card. I filled out the same form that I filled out at the FFL. I signed the credit card and walked out. NO call to FDLE that I could see.

Sheesh!

Happy that things finally worked out for you.  I'm sorry for the bureaucratic ordeal you had to endure.  Which model did you end up with?

Since I already carry a 380 when I wear clothes (that doesn't sound right..haha), I went minimalist, 22lr. Got the grip holster too.

adp3

Nice gun.  I like the little .22LR's  a lot.  I usually carried mine with CCI Velocitors.   Be careful with pocket carry.  I recommend carrying with an empty chamber under the hammer.  The holster-grip leaves the hammer exposed.  Twice I had a Black Widow, in a pocket holster that left the hammer exposed, move off of the cylinder safety notch and over a live round.  The first time I assumed I had done something wrong.  The second time I bought a holster that covered the exposed hammer.
