is the 22 mag that viable?

A Buddy of mine and I made it to the outdoor target range to see how the 22 mag Pug held up to the .380 ACP Colt Mustang. I had hollow points, he didn't but the damage to a gallon jug of water at 25 yds was about even. We both missed it once but then these guns are really for short range. The mag CCI ammo had much more velocity but less impact. Then switching to paper targets at 25 feet the mag was much more accurate even with the shorter barrel with similar recoil. I think with the price difference in 50 rounds of ammo and I am glad I chose the 22 mag.  Also the Pug was about $200 less than the Colt.
The only other benefit I find with the Pug is it is totally concealable with a side arm draw leather holster on my belt in an untucked shirt.
My friend keeps his in his car's glove compartment.
20 rounds for $38 because it's not as in demand
for 50 rounds for $16-$19
you may not need it but you should have it

What is the first rule of gun fighting?... Have a gun!  The Pug on your person is there when you need it.  The glove compartment is a great place to get a gun stolen from.  My thoughts, YMMV.

It would be interesting to see the ballistics difference between the .380 and .22 Mag

Having both calibers, I find I carry a .22 mag "all the time" and a .380 on occasion.  Probably because of the size difference of the guns.

I am surprised at how many guns are stolen out of people's vehicles

I'd say at least once a month a customer will tell me about having a gun taken from their car/truck

There is a lesson here... Don't leave a gun in a vehicle  ;)

The stupid gun free zones are a big reason for Guns being left in vehicles in my opinion.

22 mag bullet mass and energy well below a 380 or 32. Velocity likely higher (?), not sure, it could be looked up. Biggest negative for SD would be that the 22 mag is still rimfire, with the slightly iffy ignition.
"If you get it and didn't work for it, someone else worked for it and didn't get it..."

My son-in-law has a thumb print release lock box bolted to his Jeep under the drivers seat. I don't know what it cost him but it was
probably worth it.

If you're just using the box while you're away from the car, I wonder if you could just bolt down the metal box that the NNA guns come in. When you get in the car, unlock the box, put the gun in the pants pocket, or the door pocket.

That would be pretty cool a thumb print lock . Better yet bolt it to the floor on the passenger side with easy access , those metal boxes are a great idea with NAA . If in plain view I'd paint it matching a kids lunch box . :)

OV-1D,
Now that is a good idea!!! Hide/secure in plain sight!!

Anvil,
Now time for me to get up on the soapbox...again.  Testing SD firearms at 25 yards is basically foolhardy. In 40 yrs LE experience,I have never heard of a SD incident at that distance. Ten feet or (way) less is the norm.

My practice sessions consist of Jelly Bryce Drills which is a playing card size target at 6-8 feet distance and fire all five rounds as quickly (and safely) as possible.

Jelly Bryce?  He was an Oklahoma City police officer, later to be an FBI agent. His firearms techniques are still being taught at the FBI academy today.

Look him up and you will see what I mean.

Also, all the other above advise given by other members of the forum are excellent. Well worth taken.

Here are two articles that give ballistics info on a lot of different calibers, including 22mag and 380:

https://www.luckygunner.com/labs/self-defense-ammo-ballistic-tests/

https://www.luckygunner.com/labs/self-defense-ammo-ballistic-tests/#380ACP

For 22mag vs 380, penetration isn't that different, but for expansion, the 380 damage radius is larger.

If you can hit your target at 25 yards, you can darn sure hit it at 10 yards!

Well the truth is I was a purdy good shooter back in my day. I won the state Championship two years in a row in IHMSA with small bore so yes, I can hit a target proper at 25 yds with my pug on a good day.  :)

I don't look at old age as a set back, but as a challenge to adapt to new situations.

For close to four years I was on crutches but that did not deter me from doing things.

Fortunately I do not go to the VA (I do not want a second chance to die for my country) as they would have taken my diabetic foot for sure.

Surgery two years ago basically took care of the problem and I am pretty much out and about.

Funny thing,at that hospital two years ago................they had me listed as deceased!!!

Do I sound dead to you????

Good article here:

https://www.thetruthaboutguns.com/north-american-arms-mini-revolver-roundup/

Shows the differences in ballistics between a Pug, Black Widow, and a Mini Master - larger than you might expect.
