Tea staining is a great idea also . I'm going to make a set of ironwood with that insert of yours between the scales just for practise first , started them today and finishing up on an old petrified wood set I've had going forever . That's one of my problems I start two and three things at the same time , gotta focus on one .  :)

45 those are going to be absolutely awesome on that Sidewinder.  I agree that the members here have got quite a talent for doing custom work on their minis.  I'm going to make some Elk grips for my BP to match the LR one some day.  I've got a huge antler that could make a bunch of grips.

Woke up this morning looking at the mammoth grip I made over the weekend and it could be one of the best I have made.  Thanks in part to OV-1D who inspired me to use a antler spacer instead of my normal wood.  Power of the forum and exchange of ideas.  Love the way this mammoth imitated the bark of a antler.  Really doubt if many people looking at it just don't see a normal western antler grip.  That is just cool to me.   Now got to order screw set and finish that will take some time, but fun to have them at least this far.

once I purchased my earl I found I had to have custom grips.

OV-1D

Hey , hey we have another artisan , welcome there Blade thanks for sharing those , they look to be a good size also , nice . :) :)

45Flint good for you , I'd be careful about staining for the simple fact you can't really take it back . Spressor has some dyed ones on GunBroker too much color that takes away from the piece I think anyhow , maybe if the piece didn't look good or one wasn't happy with it to begin with . I've seen some mammoth scales with the marrow almost black , dark brown NOW those would look fabulous with a high polish but matching a spacer would be tough unless they were thick enough to rout out for one piece sides . Then dying would come in handy for a spacer .  :) :)

Thank you OV...but I apologize for not being more clear...

I commissioned a good friend who is a custom knifemaker to make them. I do not have the skill as of yet...although I am considering tackling it soon possibly.

I have already ordered another earl...and my friend said one was his limit...as a favor to me.

and yes...they are slightly larger to accommodate my grip. Elk btw...

OV-1D

As the old saying goes Blade measure twice cut once when you do start a set , you'll find it enjoyable just take your time and think them out . Give yourself plenty of material to start out with till you get the knack for it , piece of cake so to say . After your first set you won't have a factory set on anything .  ;) ;) ;) ;) They will always remain special .

Those Elk are very nice,  he did a great job of leaving most of the bark in tact.  That takes planning and skill.  Can we see the back view!  Did he route the antler so no spacer was necessary?

Thanks for the advise  OV...I will definitely go slow and easy.

He used cocobolo as a spacer.

Thanks he did it the same way we are.  I can tell you he does not want to make another one cause the process of making the spacer and gluing it all up is very time comsuming.  I really don't see how you can make these and sell them for a profit.

OV-1D

45Flint I couldn't part with anything I make so making a buck at it isn't a factor . Like you said we put so much time , effort , blood sometimes , burnt fingertips and material cost into these little gems who could part with them , haha . I'm getting to the point I need more guns to put the dang grips on go figure . It's the see-saw affect , hahaha.  ;) ;) ;)

I think you invented the ivory or antler spacer!!

OV-1D

45Flint flattery will get you everywhere , NOW if I invented the antler or the ivory then were talking business ,  ;D ;D ;D ;D HaHaHa . Hey if we measure out the exact CONSTENT diameter of these pistols we could order that same size , already cut , piece of ivory for our beauties from Boone Trading Company . Think how far a five inch piece would go and we could make standard pieces that seem to slow us down at least me anyhow . That's the problem I run into wanting to do everything FAST or I start to lose interest temporarily , I do have a self made job STILL and it gets in the way of free time , hahaha . So when I do complete a set it's a small milestone and that's one reason I can't part with any ........................................ One tool on my list is a foot control for my Dremel , gotta have to help speed things up .  :) :)

I have said for years...I need more guns for the grips I want.:)
(In reference to OV's remark a couple posts up)

"foot control for my Dremel" aka rheostat makes gunsmithing projects much easier and precise. Difference is night and day. Compressed air instruments make the difference even bigger. Very little I cannot do with my compressed air setup at the office. The minutest of adjustments and cuts and polishing can be done with the setup.

OV-1D

Also love my air tools Roguets but the compressor I have it's kinda portable so my cfm's are at the bare minimum for full all out power if some pieces will run at all . Need bigger , out of work area location would be nice too , to run allot of my stuff .  :)

I understand. If I did not need the "Instrument" setup for office procedures I would be very hesitant about attempting the same set up in the home workshop but since I do I have the best instruments money can buy at my disposal. They work wonders on guns, motorcycle, car and kart jobs.

Roguets you have to have a DOTCO hand grinder best dam air tool I 've ever used . :)
