I collect old BB guns, mostly Daisy's but I do have a few others like Crosman's and Benjamin's. I have around 85 of them now and still growing. Any other BB gun collectors out there?

MR_22

I have quite a little BB/Pellet gun collection. Nothing really rare or valuable, but some nice shooters, my opinion. You don't necessarily have to have gun powder behind the projectile for good performance and hours of shooting fun!

I also have quite a few airguns... not so many BB GUNS.

My latest collecting passion is early classic air guns. Since I retired I can shoot them in the backyard.  They can be more accurate than firearms. My lastest is a early 1950s Hy-Score, just about mint in the box. Great engineering, the barrel runs the entire length of the barrel 10 inches and has bluing equal to a Colt.

Those are excellant 45Flint , the Walther seems to be a good size gun . Are they both pump or CO2 and where are the loading chambers , calibers also ?  ???

Those are some really nice guns that you all have. Here are some pictures of my collection. These are older pictures and I have acquired several more guns since these pictures were taken, in fact all of the shelves are full now and I'm having to try and find spots to put them....lol.

They are both spring piston, where you cock the spring once and it powers the piston.  Both shoot over 400 fps, pretty powerful.  The Walther is a good size pistol the spring is in the grip so it's full size for sure.  Both are .177, the Walther barrel breaks as you cock it, to load. The Hy-Score you load in back by turning the back and opening a camera style iris and closing it.  That's how you get a barrel the entire length of the gun. See pic.  With the barrel running the entire length of the gun the barrel runs through the middle of the piston, very precise machining and design.

Nice thing about collecting air guns is they are cheap, all except that Walther! Lol

I'd love to have a vintage Red Ryder (pre-plastic parts) that would be in decent condition and a shooter. I figured they would cost a fortune but recently saw a few listed for under $200.  I had one in the early 70s, so one from that time frame would be ideal.  Most of what I saw listed were collectors.  Perhaps that will be a garage sale find someday.

OV-1D

Thanks Tird thats the one alright . Now I gotta find a super condition one . :) :)

I have one in my collection, it's not perfect but it is very nice. Not for sale though, sorry. I just put new seals in one for a guy a few weeks ago, they are nice shooting guns with new seals in them.

I find mine at Craigslist, flea markets and garage sales. In fact, I just picked one up at a garage sale for $5 the other day. It's wasn't in the best condition so I refinished it and it came out beautiful.
If you live anywhere close to Findlay Ohio or Kalamazoo Michigan I can tell you about some airgun shows that they have there. I go to the Findlay one every year, it was just last month.

swolf

I've been to Findlay, but not anywhere near there these days.  I would enjoy refinishing a Ryder, but I'm not smart or patient enough to deal with faulty internals.  I'll either get lucky some day or continue to do without.

Believe it or not, the internals are not very complex at all on the older daisy Red Ryders. some common sense and a special made tool and it's a snap.

swolf

Well, I got me a Red Ryder!  I found a 1976 model on a NY collector site for $65 & shipping.  The listing said it had been heavily used.  I expected to do a lot of refinishing, but was surprised to find the gun in great condition.  So nice to find someone underselling their stuff for a change!  Shoots a bit slow.  Listing said 195 fps.  I took TBird's encouragement  and after tearing it down (making the special secret tool from an old peg-board hanger) and polishing and oiling internals, I get about 210 but some sources say it should do 240.  A Canadian air gunner site said there is a machine gun spring that can fit and take the velocity up a lot, but I'm happy with the simple backyard plinking speed and don't want to risk stress damage.  Internals don't seem to be very worn. No rust inside.  It was a fun weekend project.  I think I've now gone from being a guy who has a few bb guns to "collector"status.  I need to pick up some extra containers of bbs, and then I'm ready for President Hillary--until she come for my Red Ryder in my cold, dead hand.....

Where did you get it repaired at?

bbgun

Swolf   That is a fairly rare Red Ryder.  It was made only a couple of years.  It is the older type RR with the shot tube in it, and it is painted instead of blued.

Interesting info!  I was surprised with the paint rather than blueing, but it looks great and would be easy to touch up if I wanted to.

It did come back with paint chips,

I think what he meant to say was it is blued instead of painted. The older guns were blued and the newer guns are painted. That gun should be a model 111-40. They started selling them in 1940 and sold them for several years. They are very nice guns, they are rare but not super rare. Now when they first started making them they had copper plated bands around the front sight and the forearm band, that was in 1940 and 1941. (These guns are very rare) then the war came and they had to stop making BB guns due to all the metal had to go to the war effort. After the war they started producing these guns again but they didn't have the copper plated bands. So if you find one with copper plated bands they are worth around $300.

Cool. I've thought about doing the conversion. I also have the Umarex steel storm UZI-like pistol. Same innards, I think.

These are a lot of fun, but they goggle up CO2 really fast!

TBird, I meant painted.  There were some of them in the 70s, I forget what years, that were the old type model with the shot tube.  They were painted.  I have six of that model and  probably 40+ Red Ryders.  I'm just like Ralphie.  Got that Buck Jones Special too -- the real one with the compass and the sun dial.
