Felt recoil with mags

I have a half dozen 22 rifles and a couple of Heritage revolvers - one accepts LR or mags - the felt recoil is modest to say the least shooting magnum bullets - I was curious about the felt recoil with magnum bullies on such a tiny gun - no doubt the longer barrel would cut down that but what about a shorter barrel length - the reason I bring this up is I do have osteoporosis and very thin bone density / any advice and knowledge on this would be real helpful - thanks folks !

On my Pug (with the one inch barrel) there is more recoil with the 22 mag than the 22LR.  But it's easily manageable.  With little grips like on the plain magnums, it's likely to kick up where you have to reset your hold on the pistol if you shoot it one-handed.  With bigger grips, it's no problem at all.

I won't carry a laser device... unless it has stun, kill, and disintegrate settings.

I'm no doctor proimage, I have some arthritis, mostly from motorcycle injuries, and don't find the recoil bad at all.  I  shoot the Pug, Black Widow, and 2.5" Sidewinder.  I am guessing you might find the Black Widow the easiest to handle.  It is the heaviest, and has the biggest grip of those three, and those both help mitigate recoil.

If you buy one, I suggest getting the combo with a .22LR and a .22 Mag cylinder.  If the recoil of the magnum bothers you; practice with the .22 LR cylinder, and carry the .22 magnum rounds for protection.

Or you can just change out the grips on any magnum frame to something larger.  Examples of different grips:

Thanks guys - great knowledge from all of you - I turned 64 earlier this month !  I shoot at a local gun range at least once a month - I'm really excited about these minis - knowing me a lot of it is the cool factor / they're awesome and even though I've yet to handle one I can see myself starting a collection !  That's what haopened with my 22 rifles - I've got 7-8 of them and love every one of them - I've also got the Ruger GP 100 in 357 mag on my short list !

Yes you can change the grips, but gun weight lessens the recoil, not the grip. Couple of extra ounces makes a difference.

That is why the Wasp shows up as having more recoil than the BW.

Uncle Fatso

I have fairly bad problems with arthritis in my hands and have never noticed any increased pain or difficulty from shooting my BW.

Boisesteve

All three of my NAA mini-mags have oversize grips installed, two have oversize wood and one has Black Widow.  I practice with both 22mag and 22LR and YES the mags recoil more forcefully but to my 70 year old hands, with the oversize grips, it's no big deal at all.
I can't speak to how it feels with the original mini grips, I've never used them.
The reason I practice with LR is that it costs less, not due to a pain issue.
Every firearm is an experiment-of-one with it's owner.  Try it all, use what works best for you, and for that reason I'd always recommend getting an NAA with both LR and mag cylinders.

Also remember that a ported NAA is an option too.

I would start with the Black Widow, as others have recommended.  It has less recoil than the smaller minis due to the larger grip, longer barrel, and (possibly) the unfluted cylinder.  If shooting the BW isn't an issue, then you can consider some of the smaller minis.

I also happen to think the Black Widow is the best of the NAAs and a fine small handgun by any standard.

proimage1,

I don't know where you are located, but if you are in Middle TN I'd be more than willing to let you try out my Pug and BugOut II.  I'm betting there are a few others on the forums that would make the same offer.

That would awesome - what a great offer but I'm several states away from you - I'm in the north Florida panhandle area - I'm sure I can handle the recoil - I had a Smith and Wesson small frame 9mm and it had quite a bite to it and I'm probably overthinking these minis !
And I  do need to read up more on the BW !
Thanks again guys - this appears to be a great place to hang out and learn !

TO ARMS , TO ARMS the liberal socialists are coming . Load and prime your weapons . Don't shoot till you see their UN patches or the Obama bumper stickers , literally . And shoot any politician that says he wants to help you or us .

Texduk3

welcome to the forum,
the recoil is quite acceptable
for such a small frame.
My black widow and my 1 5/8 mag frame ( w BW grips)
seem to handle it well.
just got 5 boxes today from Midway

I have an earl, 3 inch the stock grips will eat away at your palm after a box of 22mags. hog leg minimaster bugout blackwidow 32 guardian. I am infected 8)ntxaup

I'm more concerned about hearing loss than felt recoil with magnums in these.

OV-1D

You know Riadat your the first person I believe that really hit the nail on the head with magnums , too freaking loud for any real difference with a mini . Ear protection is a must in an enclosed room . Most of us old guys can't hear anyhow , ha ,ha , but its good to protect what little is left .

billmeek

That's whay they make hearing protection.  If I ever have to use a firearm for self defense, I'm not going to worry too much about the hearing loss from a couple of 22 magnum rounds.

Yes Kids, use hearing protection.
I miss the sound of wind blowing in the trees.
The squirrel cutting on a walnut.
A bird singing.
The television. (I use an amplified headset)
The wife saying "It's time to eat.".
The sound of a Harley going down the road.
The doctor said it was from shooting without hearing protection.
Hey, the ears get "used to it". No, that is the hearing going away.
Of course some of could have come from the diesel engines on the first ship that I went on. (LOUD) DE

I don't use the telephone..  I think that is a good thing.
I paid $1800.00 dollars for hearing aids.......basically useless.

I shoot mags in my pug and the BW and they are both a hoot. I shot the Pug enough that the original grip started to tear so I replaced it with the grips from a Mini Master and it really added some grip. I thought it might as they are virtual identical to the BW grip except for the spider emblem. As mentioned, get a combo setup on the gun you choose, it makes it much more versatile, cheaper to practice with .22lr and cheaper than sending back to NAA for an additional cylinder if you find the mags recoil bothers your hand. Good luck in choosing, and like the rest of us, you can always get the other one next 8)
