Since NAA was kind enough to send me a demilled magnum frame (and a LR frame!) I can now make grips for the magnum NAA guns.
Here is a set of laminated abalone grips I just finished for a customer.

scout

Beautiful!
Can the larger styles of grips be made, and would they stand up to daily use?
Prices and wait times?

bill_deshivs

You mean the oversize, wrap-around grips? No, I don't make those.
I can make the grips thicker than stock ones, though.
Email me at [email protected] for particulars.

WOW Bill those are without question beautiful . That's one material I haven't tried yet to make grips from . How thick is a one side piece ?

RangerJim

Absolutely beautiful, Bill!  Wow!
So, making guns illegal will take them off the street?
Perfect!  We should probably make heroine and meth illegal, too!

bill_deshivs

I believe I started with 3/8" thickness.
Thanks, everyone!

Excellent polish job on those too!

Bill, those are very nice looking trips. I wish you'd make boot grips. Those are my faves, I would get some abalone boot grips.

Hi Bill,
I hope they sent you the correct frames! 😄

No offense Bill but when I asked you to make a set of abalone grips for my .22 short Mini awhile back, they were so far off to fitting, it took me hours of judicious filing to get them to fit and you charged me $110.00 which was breath taking for these grips that didn't really fit!

No problem as custom gips are worth the time and effort and you did apologize and when I look at them now, the fit is still off but they're okay.

I'm just saying, I hope your customers have better fitting grips than I received. Good luck!

By the way, Warthog, why are you still responding to threads ?

bill_deshivs

Gebe- your grips were fitted to my old 1978 .22 short gun. They fit it perfectly.
I do have both new magnum and small frames now.

I usually keep my mouth shut when I see stuff like this but for some reason that just irked me. If you don't wanna see posts from certain members then block them. Don't just poke the bear to stir up the hornets nest. Rant over.

Bill, not trying to argue here but so was my .22 Short Mini. I bought it when the very first .22 short Mini from NAA first came out.

It was just so frustrating that I had to do all that work to get your grips to work and the price I paid you, (including an extra fairly high shipping return price).

Listen Bill, I probably shouldn't have brought all of this up but I had to call a spade a spade. You are a talented artist and thanks for that and that you're a member of these great forums!

I hope you will sell tons of these grips, as long as they fit perfectly!

Heyjoe, I can answer your first part...  Because I want to. ( I have to modify a little. I thought it read "Why would you?" Sorry about that.
The second part I can't answer.

For those that are interested, these grips are laminated abalone. The backing is black phenolic, then the thin abalone, then a thick clear acrylic lens over the abalone.
They are quite durable. If the acrylic eventually gets scratched up, it can be sanded and polished to look like new.
And in case any of you are wondering-these fit the customer's gun perfectly and he is very happy.

Dinadan

Beautiful work, Bill! I do not have any abalone. I am afraid it will be like mother of pearl: I used to think I did not like MOP. After I got a couple of knives with MOP handles I decided that I like it too much.

bill_deshivs

Oh- I can do mother of pearl laminate, too!

So - how much do you charge for a set of Magnum Abalone grips?

FYI: "Blocked" forum members can respond, but their response(s) don't appear in the response YOU see - just a forum message that reads "You are ignoring this user", and a link labelled "show me the post".

Don't ask me how I know.... ;)

For those concerned ,years back the interior of the frame where the grips mount was cleaner and more or less duplicated the other being more finished off . Todays castings seem to be quite a bit rougher and change sizes for grips not to just fall into place . Getting two guns the same would be hit and miss . So filing some of these grips will be just something to put up with . Myself I've found filing (FRAME) the seating area for the grips helps to make them all more universal with each other . File once check twice over and over again till you got them just right . Hand file only , NO DREMEL unless your a brain surgeon . I've only lost three patients so far that's because the nurse was playing grab as* with me .:):):):)

For what it's worth, I guarantee my work.
Had Gebe simply said his grips don't fit and he wasn't happy, I would have simply returned his money.
It is my recollection that he said he had to do some fitting (which is to be expected) but that he was satisfied with the grips.
This is strictly for the record, as this incident has caused some "interesting" things on this forum.
BTW- the latest customer said his grips fit great and he is happy with them.

Gunnuts

I'm a big fan of abalone, so when I saw Mr. DeShivs is making grips, I had to upgrade the whole set.

All grips made standard size. LR does fit the belt buckle.

And one for Rick Jorgenson. I'm a fan of his holsters, too.  :D

Yes Bill, I agree, I should have done that. But when you pay a premium for grips and an extra high fee for shipping, and another fee for shipping them back, I didn't want to go through all of that.

Yes, there should be a little bit of fitting but over 4 hours of fitting was quite a hassle! When I posted the pictures of the grips, you made a comment that they weren't as fitting as they should have been.

Look and I admit and as Bill said, I should have sent them back but after all the expense, I just wanted them to work. I still look at them with pride but always notice they could have been better.

I'm glad folks are happy with Bill's work with these and he is a craftsman like I stated before. I apologize for my intrusions in his thread. I'm just so used to shoddy work nowadays and Bill's work is not.

Go on in providing what most of us can't Bill! 😀

One good thing that came out of this thread is calling out Warthog. He was a true conflicting character. He could be so helpful and knowledgeable at times but if he liked what you said, he would send you the most insane and nonsensical emails you ever had read!

Anyway, I've already covered all that about him and I've noticed that he seems to be gone for now. Let's continue on!

bill_deshivs

My shipping fee of $11.00 is not particularly high.
