What is the purpose of the ports on the barrel of a NAA .22 Magnum and why would you need them?
Not here for a long time, here for a good time!

theysayimnotme

None. Just for the looks. The barrel is too short for it to have any value.

gunr

It keeps the machinist at NAA employed

bill_deshivs

And it can blow crap in your eyes, cause night blindness, and makes the already horrendous muzzle blast even worse.

Kevin

It allows the unburned powder to fall out of the barrel when you tilt it sideways and shoot it Steven Seagal style.

chopprs

.......and there ya go!

I thought it was a pencil holder for mini pens so the guy you shoot can sign a release............  NO?

Thanks to all.  Gave me some good laughs!

Most of my revolvers are ported I love it I'm getting my mini master ported it helps trust me

bill_deshivs

It helps reduce the already low muzzle velocity....

Uncle_Lee

How much does the porting drop the muzzle velocity?

I really would like to know.

Uncle_Lee

With the ports that close to the end of the barrel, I don't think it would lower it that much.

.....me too.......me too.......

heyjoe

do you guys want to know how much the porting drops the muzzle velocity?
It's too bad that our friends cant be here with us today

Uncle_Lee

I have heard people say that porting drops the muzzle velocity a lot in a hand gun.

I would like to know how much the porting affects the North American Arms Mini revolver.

Yes, I would like to know that.

I suspect it would be hard to quantify. The differences in velosity from shot to shot are likely larger. You would have to have a large amount of data to get a good answer.

If you ask the folks at Mag-na-port:

quote:

A number of chronograph tests have been conducted over the years. It has been proven, time and again, that Mag-na-porting does not influence velocities to any meaningful extent.

Granted, the ports in the minis may not be Mag-na-port brand, but my guess is it will take some very sophisticated equipment to be able to measure the difference in a ported and non-ported mini. It if takes that level of sophistication to measure the difference, the difference is not worth measuring, not for our uses.

bill_deshivs

The shorter the barrel, the more porting affects velocity.

How much overall, I don't know.

chopprs

Well that is a conundrum. You make a statement and in the same satement you say you do not know.

What you are really saying is that you are guessing....

After all, when you make a statement with no data to back it up, that IS called a "guess"!

Uncle_Lee

I think (my guess) the effect (if any) would be so small that it wouldn't matter at all.

   That's what I thought.

Either he is guessing or he read it on the internet. I was trying to get him to admit which.

Al Gore invented the internet so you can't believe most of what you read there.

Never repeat what you read on the internet without backing it up, it makes you look like Al Gore.

I'm w/ Unc Lee. Any holes between the exit and the starting point will decrease velocity. Is it enough for the average person to be able to measure? I personally doubt it. Will it be an amount large enough to change the desired outcome versus an ported barrel? No.

......I seem to be having an episode of "Deja-Vu".......

louiethelump

is that the same as diarrhea?

No one asked me, but in my opinion, if ports in a 1" barrel 22 handgun are the answer, it must have been a real stupid question.................

The question was:

What can we do to this mini revolver to make the "cute" complete?

   The answer is:

   Porting!!!!

Hey!

Anybody out there know if porting a 1/2" long cut off barrel will have any effects??..............................

You planning on porting the part still attached to the frame or the piece on the floor?

bill_deshivs

Any idiot would understand that porting would decrease velocity. If the propellent gases are still expanding and are vented from the barrel, there will be loss. Since I don't have a chronograph or ported gun, I can't say how much loss.

chopprs

"Any idiot would understand......."

   ...LOL......you said it, I didn't!!!!!

bill_deshivs

Yes, and I meant it!

Uncle lee,

I was planning on putting 5 ports in the cylinder! Up front, near the area where the little lead thingy's pass by!

bill_deshivs

It's already got them! They're in the front of the cylinder!
