I purchased and installed one of the NAA folding grips for a magnum but I did not like the natural color of the stainless steel peeking out the top of my jean's front pocket.  With a little bit of flat black paint I made the Black Window a little less noticeable.

WELCOME to the forum!

Problem found, problem solved. The neat part of your solution is, it is removable should you opt for a different grip. Any other minis (yet)?

My folding grip is on my 1 5/8" mini and it has the same problem. I now feel the need for some black paint. Cool idea!!!!  ;D

You can't just have one!  I have a 22LR with 1 1/8" barrel that has over 500 rounds shot thru it without an issue.  For some reason I just love these little shooters and they always seem to find a way into my pocket!  My next mini is the Sidewinder with the LR conversion as soon as my local dealer can get one in.

bill7676

 :)well that's a nice looking bw,,,bet she shoots good too,,,great job............. ;)

bill7676

how does the bw shoot with them grips on it ??? I have a mini mag with lr cyl.. with the 1-5/8"barrel now, but when I can  afford it I may try to get a bw with conv.22 lr cyl....anyways yours looks pretty good.....does the bw shot good???

bill7676

I seen on buds gun shop where they have a lot of naa for sale, prob. where I will end up buying from.....

What type paint did you use? It look like the color matches the grip perfectly!!!!

I used TESTORS Acrylic Paint Marker, Flat Black #2634.  The folding grip isn't as nice to shoot as the original but what the folder brings to conceal ability is well worth the trade off.

At first the bw wasn't hitting its mark but after a small adjustment to the front sight (punch and hammer) she started to hit true from 10yds.

I had my first ammo issue with it today.  I bought a couple boxes of Hornady 30 GR. V-MAX and had 9 failure to fire out of the first 50.  6 of the 9 fired on the second hammer strike but the other 3 were complete duds. Thinking that I just got a bad batch I opened the next box and had another failure to fire on the second round.  Tomorrow I will give them a try in my Henry and see if I run into the same issue.

I have NEVER had a failure to Fire with ANY NAA

I'm pretty sure it's the ammo since I have shoot over 200 rds of CCI without a single failure.

Thanks Skunchy1!!!!

Well I have. ;)  :o :o

It was caused by those lil lint balls that form/accumulate in the grip where the main spring is with pocket carry. I removed them when I went to install new springs.

A email to NAA resulted in a couple new main springs to swap in for good measure. NO MORE ISSUES!  ::) ;)

Hornady is usually real good... I am surprised. I have fired more than a few bricks in a doz different firearms and never once had a misfire. Actually as a rule, I rarely if ever have ammo related misfires with magnum ammo...

Well, I didn't get the opportunity to shoot the remaining Hornady rounds thru the Henry today.  The wife had me busy installing new faucets in the bathroom and hanging a new  entry door for the shed.  Maybe after work tomorrow.  With the gun being new I wouldn't think it would be a spring issue this soon, but, never say never.

grayelky

I suspect it is the ammo. A year or more back there was some faulty ammo, and the maker was trading it out. Problem is, right now I can't remember for sure if it was Hornady. I would expect that entire lot would have been sold off by now, though. If you have problems with it in your rifle, send Hornady an email. They will want the lot numbers, located on the inside of the cardboard flap.

I also had a dud with Hornady 30 gr. V-MAX the other day. First and only failure I've seen with about 250 rounds (not V-MAX) through my mini mag. It was only one so I didn't get too concerned. Another thing, I was all over the target with the V-MAX and a number were keyholes. Okay, my fault, I'm still learning. Then I shot off five gold dots: five small round holes very close to the bulls eye. Coincidence?

Skunchy1

I shot the remaining 45 rounds without an issue thru the Henry.  I'm thinking it's the bw not striking the rim smart enough to ignite the Hornady.  I still have 1 box left of the Hornady with the same lot # that I bought last week from my local Farm and Home.  I think I will shoot some CCI this weekend and see if I have any "issues" and save the Hornady for the Henry.  What a great rifle.

jstanfield103

I would also think it was the hammer spring. I believe that is the weakest part of the NAA.

bill7676

how often does the mini:s have to go back to naa to keep them in good working cond...

The black paint is a nice touch... Why didn't I think of that solution!

That many fail to fires and my firearm would be going back to the factory.

FYI: the folding grip is known to scratch the frame.  I just put a piece of Scotch tape on the frame on both sides, the put the grip back on.  Problem solved.

It's not the keyboard OV-1D, it's the 486 that the keyboard is hooked up to.  ;D ;D ;D

I shot 40rds of CCI Varmint and had a couple that required a double strike.  What's interesting is the location of the second hammer strike on the rim.  After the first strike I waited a couple minutes before I rotated the cylinder back to the bad round for another reattempt.  I didn't remove the round or spin it inside the chamber nor fire another round before the second attempt.  Notice the placement of the strike. Is this normal?  (Notice the sweet dimples from the Henry?  I just had to shoot a few before the ammo was gone.  It's not a Winchester but what a rifle!)

I want to thank Skunchy1 again for this great idea but the only paint pen I could find was a sharpy and it was gloss black. Looked bad and did not stick to the SS at all. After several days I gave up looking and bought a small can of KRYLON rust protector in flat black (oil base). It is very thick and sticks to the SS very well. I did two coats and on the second one, because it was so thick I dabbed it with the brush after I coated it. I like the look! It is on my 1 1/5" mini mag....  8)

Looks nice. Keep us posted

Skunchy1

The heavier paint turned out great!  Maybe when it's time to redo mine I'll go the route you went.  What would it take for NAA to redesign the folding grip to cover the exposed frame or produce a "Black Out" version of the Widow?  I would have to buy another one if they did that!!

I've owned/shot about 15 different NAA Mini's over the past 30-odd years, and have never had to return one to the factory (or have one that needed gunsmithing).

How did your main spring hold up Pietro ? Ever replace ? Springs I've noticed have lost a little zip after allot of banging away . ???

Perhaps we could see more minis treated to the DLC of the Black Jack. A (truly!) Black Widow would be a nice start!
